1.Provide individualized massage therapy treatment: The massage therapist utilizes standard patient evaluation procedures to formulate a treatment plan. The massage therapist incorporates various massage therapy and bodywork techniques taught within their professional education. The massage therapist provides advanced massage therapy services of greater complexity applied to specialty populations in various clinical/environmental settings with limited supervision and coordinate follow up care as indicated. The massage therapist is responsible for changing linen between patients, refilling oils, cleaning massage table/chair/arm rest, and providing a clean, calm environment.

2.Provide massage therapy instruction, education, and mentoring; The massage therapist provides massage therapy instruction for self-care to patient and family as determined appropriate. The massage therapist educates patients on healthy lifestyle including hydration, basic nutrition, stretching, exercise, mind-body techniques, sleep habits, stress management and other matters related to massage therapy care. The massage therapist has knowledge of complementary integrative health and holistic health principles. The massage therapist mentors other staff in best massage therapy practices. Under routine academic oversight, the massage therapist assists with clinical supervision of massage therapy students. The supervisor has an advanced knowledge of massage therapy across multiple areas of practice. The massage therapist is a subject matter expert, responsible for mentoring other massage therapists and participating in educational activities and public relations. The massage therapist has knowledge of teaching methods and learning principles and assists other staff through education as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team.

3.Complete clinical notes in electronic health record system: The massage therapist shall document, and code information related to patient care in the VA's electronic health care record on a timely basis following established policies. Consent shall be completed prior to treatment in accordance with local requirements. The massage therapist functions as a member of the health care team and communicates with other health care providers as appropriate.
4. Maintain trainings and attend required meetings: The massage therapist shall maintain up-to-date with VHA and professional trainings. Required professional meetings must be attended.

5. Research and quality improvement: The massage therapist participates in research and quality improvement activities related to massage therapy. The massage therapist is required to use various communication techniques to encourage and educate individuals and groups to enhance massage therapy outcomes. The massage therapist is responsible for identifying, collecting and analyzing aggregate patient care information to ensure safety and quality of care.

6. Administrate supervisory duties: The supervisory massage therapy performs a full range of administrative and supervisory duties which includes, but is not limited to assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements. The supervisor gives guidance to staff massage therapists and integrates the practice of massage therapy with other health care disciplines in the health care setting. The supervisor assists in matters related to policy development, equipment requests and workload analysis for the unit. The supervisor delegates authority within the unit as appropriate and evaluates and oversees people and programs in order to accomplish program goals and adapt to changing priorities. The supervisor's typical duties include making work assignments, monitoring of staff clinical performance, conducting performance appraisals, and other clinical and administrative responsibilities as assigned to ensure that the mission of the service and the medical center has been satisfied.

7.Travel between the main Miami VA Facility and the CBOCs to provide care to veterans and supervise other staff Massage therapists.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

The basic requirements for employment as a Health Technician (Massage Therapy) are prescribed by Public Law 96-151 and codified in 38 U.S.C. § 7402. To qualify for appointment, all applicants for the position of Health Technician (Massage Therapy) in VHA must meet the following:

a. Citizenship. Candidates must be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

b. Education. Candidates must complete a minimum 500-hour massage therapy education program.

c. Licensure, Registration, or Certification (1) Candidates must be currently licensed, registered, or certified to practice as a massage therapist in a state, territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Acceptable credentials must have required successful completion of a minimum 500-hour massage therapy education program and pass the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination, National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork Examination, or equivalent state-issued examination. OR, (2) Candidates must possess and maintain a board certification from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB)

d. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019, Employee Occupational Health Service, paragraph 2. (Sitting, standing, lifting up to 40 pounds.)

e. English Language Proficiency. Individuals appointed under the authority of 38 U.S.C. chapters 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA, must be proficient in written and spoken English. See Chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.

f. Supervisory Health Technician (Massage Therapy), GS-9 :

(a) Experience. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, candidates must possess one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the GS-8 grade level.

g. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate all the following KSAs:

(1) Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties which include, but are not limited to: assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements.

(2) Advanced knowledge of massage therapy across multiple areas of practice, and the demonstrated ability to provide guidance to staff massage therapists.

(3) Knowledge of how massage therapy integrates with other health care disciplines

(4) Ability to assist in matters related to policy development, equipment requests, and workload analysis.

(5) Ability to delegate authority, evaluate and oversee people and programs, accomplish program goals, and adapt to changing priorities.

Assignment. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. The Supervisory Health Technician (Massage Therapy) is responsible for the supervision, administrative management, and direction of Health Technicians (Massage Therapy). The Supervisory Health Technician (Massage Therapy) has full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the activities for the service or equivalent unit.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
