Duties

Help

The Counselor/Generalist position also requires the ability to provide and facilitate psycho-educational training programs. The candidate will need the ability to present sensitive, and at times controversial, information to groups of people in a clear, concise manner and the ability to modify programs to meet the ever-changing needs of the active-duty military community.

Clinical counseling includes the psychosocial assessment of individuals, development of treatment plans, treatment delivery and appropriate referral for active-duty military members and their families.

In addition to clinical counseling duties, the Navy Family Advocacy Program requires ability to provide case management services, which include the identification and reporting of allegations of child and spouse abuse.

The ability to assess risk and prepare safety plans is required.

The candidate must be able to complete psychosocial assessments and treatment plans, provide treatment or make appropriate referral.

The position requires knowledge of intensive psychosocial services and a wide range of skills (casework, group work, individual and family therapy).

Both clinical and Family Advocacy Cases may involve difficult and complex family problems, i.e., violence or mental health issues.

Irregular working hours may be required to include early shift, late shift, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on occasion a 24-hour on call rotation.

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of T3 background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

Qualifications

Resumes must include information which demonstrates experience and knowledge, skills, and ability (KSAs) as they relate to this position. Applicants are encouraged to be clear and specific when describing their experience level and KSAs.

A qualified candidate possess the following:

  • Possession of a current, valid, unrestricted license or certification that provides legal authority to provide clinical services as an independent practitioner in the fields of Social Work, Psychology or Marriage and Family Therapy.
  • Have engaged in 2 years (includes at least 2000 hours), of full-time, post-masters supervised clinical experience.
  • Two years of experience working in the field of child abuse and domestic abuse.
  • The candidate should have sufficient knowledge of the military lifestyle to be able to understand the specific demands of the military lifestyle, such as frequent separations, and high stress working environments that can impact individuals and families.
  • The candidate should have an understanding of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and ability to apply family systems, brief solution-focused therapy and diagnostic skill needed when interviewing clients.
  • The candidate must have knowledge of family violence treatment principles for victims and offenders.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing in English.

Education

Possession of a masters or doctoral degree in one of the following disciplines:

  1. Marriage and Family Therapy from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) or an equivalent degree.
  2. Social Work from a school accredited by Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) or an equivalent degree.
  3. Psychology from a doctoral program approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) or an equivalent degree.
