Duties

Help
  • Serve as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Officer (HPO) for the organization.
  • Manage the maintenance of the organization?s health information privacy policies and procedures.
  • Prepare detailed reports/responses for allegations of unauthorized disclosures of patient privacy.
  • Responsible for tracking of medical information released to outside individuals, organizations, and/or agencies.
  • Ensure assigned workforce members, volunteers, contractors, and other appropriate third parties who have access to Protected Health Information (PHI) receive initial HIPAA training and annual refresher training.
  • Implement methods of assessing HIPAA privacy programs ensuring management is kept informed on program status, and compliance with guidelines.

  • Tier 3: This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Certification by the American Health Information Management Association as a Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS), Registered Health Information Technician or Administrator is highly desired.
  • Immunization screening is required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes reviewing medical records to ensure protected health information compliance; working with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) training; and updating customers on privacy awareness. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Healthcare Administration.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
