The Audiologist (Clinical Specialist) has special clinical program responsibilities for the Detroit Vestibular program.

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • The Audiologist (Clinical Specialist) provides leadership and directs oversight in the design, development, implementation, planning and management of the Vestibular specialty program. Serves as a coach or facilitator for an interdisciplinary team and is responsible for training all support staff and trainees as it relates to the Vestibular specialty program. This individual serves as the SME in matters regarding the Vestibular specialty program.
  • Exercises independent clinical judgment and adapts clinical procedures and techniques to accommodate age-specific and unique patient conditions, needs, and expectations. Plans, coordinates, and implements a full range of patient-focused treatment services designed
    to optimize function.
  • Evaluates patients to determine nature, type, and severity of hearing and balance disorders using a full range of diagnostic tests and techniques, past, family, and social history, record review, and consultation with family and other health care practitioners. Provides hearing aid evaluations, assessments, selection, fitting, orientation, training, and follow-up services. Conducts verification measurements to determine function of hearing.
  • Performs compensation and pension examinations, medical opinions, tinnitus evaluations, special auditory and vestibular tests.
  • Applies advanced theories and techniques to special patient populations, provide professional advice and counseling, and provide consultation in specialized areas of audiology. In addition to clinical duties of an Audiologist (Clinical Specialist), incumbent has special clinical program responsibilities with advanced vestibular assessment and rehabilitation.
  • The incumbent engages in the differential diagnosis of the full range of hearing problems associated with functional, mixed, conductive, sensory, neural, sensorineural, and central hearing loss. In diagnosing these problems, the incumbent conducts and interprets the complete range of specialized and refined audiologic test procedures currently available. Included also is the ability to deal professionally with patients who present with inconsistent behavior, conflicting test results, and multiple handicaps that inhibit the utilization of normal audiologic test procedures.
  • The incumbent demonstrates competence in the operation and maintenance of diverse and specialized audiometric equipment, including computer facilities and adjunct components.
  • The incumbent utilizes patient records, patient performance, family interviews and counseling as they contribute essential data in the diagnostic process and appropriate patient care.
  • The incumbent organizes clinical data systematically for effective retrieval for clinic and investigational requirements.
  • The incumbent is responsible for analyzing problems that occur in the delivery of services, collection of related data and information, and implementing solutions and follow-up plans to assure that the actions were appropriate. These activities must be reported to the lead audiologist and Chief of Audiology and Speech Pathology.
  • Coordination of all vestibular evaluation and performance improvement activities.
  • Coordinating all vestibular continuing education for staff audiologists, students and residents.
  • Facilitating all vestibular equipment updates throughout Corporate Detroit Audiology.
  • Provides orientation /training of medical staff.
  • Managing the Vestibular Evaluation Referral process with ENT, Inpatient clinic, Neurology, Physical Therapy, etc.
  • Oversight of the Vestibular evaluations at Corporate Detroit.
  • Serving as POC for Vestibular related issues via Secure Messaging within the Audiology Clinics.
  • Vestibular outcome data collection and reports.
  • Monitoring/tracking vestibular evaluation consult timeliness.
  • Providing preceptor services for 3rd and/or 4th year externs per the request of the Chief of Audiology and Speech Pathology.
  • Provides information on vestibular program for Station level OAA Trainee application.
  • Participating in research regarding vestibular evaluation/rehabilitation as appropriate.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: (1) Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from an audiology program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The CAA is the only accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit entry-level audiology programs. HR office staff and management officials may verify the program accredited from CAA at www.caa.asha.org.
    OR
    (2) Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the USDE.
    NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the CAA in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree or AuD programs in audiology..
  • Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency: Audiologist candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

Audiologist ( Clinical Specialist), GS-13:
(1) Experience. At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level.
(2)Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the following KSAs are required: Addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge in a focused area of contemporary audiology practice to provide oversight of a specialty program;
  • Skill to evaluate the specialty program to ensure deadlines and goals are met;
  • Skill to coordinate initiatives and build consensus among interdisciplinary team members;
  • Ability to monitor and report on work progress in the specialty program to adjust workload and processes;
  • Ability to serve as the SME and provide education relating to the specialty program.
(3) Assignment:
For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity and range of variety and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Audiologists (clinical specialists) provide leadership and direct oversight in the design, development, implementation, planning and management of the specialty program. They serve as coaches or facilitators for the interdisciplinary team and are responsible for training all support staff and trainees as it relates to the specialty program. These individuals serve as the SME in matters regarding the specialty program.

Preferred Experience:
Skilled in Vestibular testing.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13.

Physical Requirements: The duties of the position require periods of sitting, standing, and walking. Working with patients in the clinic and on the wards requires regular sitting, bending, and standing. Patient transport occasional requires the pushing of wheelchairs. Work in front of a computer several hours per day is required. Some stressful situations may occur when communicating with patients and their families who may have multiple physical, mental and/or psychosocial problems and needs. Employee complies with all safety/fire prevention rules/regulations, using protective equipment when required. Promptly reports all accidents and notifies chief of unsafe condition in the workplace. Participates in facility and service level safety training as directed. Knows fire drill and emergency policies and procedures and for work area and facility.
