Duties

Help

The incumbent is a recognized analytical expert with a strong background in statistical analysis and machine learning, and a proven record of successfully modeling large and complex datasets. The incumbent will perform various duties under the direction and guidance of the data analytics team lead and the Chief, Security Mission Integration.

The incumbent serves as a data scientist and is responsible for advancing use cases for machine learning within the IT Security Office (ITSO) and mining the vast cyber security and organizational data resources for proactively addressing cyber security risk. The candidate should have a strong command of statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms as they will be responsible for producing machine learning models, statistical models, and complex statistical analyses.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Maturing ITSO's capabilities for diagnostic analytics by developing and refining datasets which model hard-to-detect cyber security threats across the enterprise.
  2. Developing a roadmap for establishing the use of predictive analytics in fortifying our cyber security posture.
  3. Leading large-scale exploratory data analyses for new data sources or new uses for existing data sources. Establishing links across existing data sources and finding new, interesting data correlations.
  4. Communicating complex data in simple and actionable ways.
  5. Visualizing data in the most effective way possible for a given project or question.
  6. Providing statistical programming, model development and implementation.
  7. Building key metrics and modeling reports for communication with leadership.
  8. Devising and utilizing algorithms and models to mine big data stores, performing data and error analysis to improve models, and cleaning and validating data for uniformity and accuracy.
  9. Analyzing data for trends and patterns, interpreting data with a clear objective in mind.
  10. Working both individually and in a collaborative manner with a team.

Qualifications

Applicants must have demonstrated experience as listed below. This requirement is according to the AO Classification, Compensation, and Recruitment Systems which include interpretive guidance and reference to the OPM Operating Manual for Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience, which is in or directly related to the line of work of this position. Specialized experience must demonstrate ALL areas defined below:

  1. Statistical analysis and machine learning
  2. Modeling large and complex datasets
  3. Data and content management
  4. Data extraction and normalization
  5. Data exchanges
  6. Data systems and management
  7. Problem solving

Master's of Science degree in Data Science or equivalent field of study
Master's Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or Cybersecurity
PhD in Data Science or equivalent field of study

Education

Basic Requirement: The basic requirement can be met in one of two ways. Transcripts are required.

1. Bachelor's or higher degrees: in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science or field directly related to the position.

OR

2. A combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience.
