This position serves as a Digital Imaging Specialist in the Digitization Services Section of the Digital Collection Management and Services Division in the Digital Services Directorate of the Discovery and Preservation Services Service Unit in the Library Collections and Services Group.

The incumbent will report to the designated supervisor in the Digitization Services Section. The Digitization Services Section is responsible for providing digital reformatting support to curatorial divisions within the following Service Units: Discovery and Preservation Services and Researcher and Collection Services. Digitization Services Section staff collaborate with other Library curatorial units, technical staff and external organizations to establish best practices, implement new and streamline existing digitization workflows, and identify problems and propose solutions for the workflows within the scope of the section.

In performing duties, the incumbent will have access to Gold level collections.

Provides routine technical service and support with image capture, image editing, and quality reviewing of assigned portions of projects using high-end digital cameras located in controlled environments and on location. Working with higher-level staff, sets up lighting and captures device target in order to collect data on camera setup, calibrating for tonal and color accuracy, and determining resolution. Assists in the selection of proper equipment, working with standard user requirements and collection material characteristics for proper handling. Uses specialized book cradles and other props to ensure compliance of material handling requirements provided by the Conservation Division. 

Assists in the implementation of digitization and conversion processes, such as high-resolution digital still imaging and scanning, digital format conversion, post processing, and quality review.

Works with higher-graded specialists to implement assigned portions of projects. Assists in implementing improvements to basic workflows for multiple content streams and in identifying standard risks and challenges to implementation. According to practices of the Section, establishes priorities and timeframes in coordination with management, higher-graded specialists, and stakeholders. Assists in implementing approved plans for assigned portions of projects, including recommendations on division of work. Tracks assigned portions of projects using software and other tools and schedules activities required to move projects to completion as appropriate. Assists higher-graded specialists in reporting the status of projects.

Assists in designing and implementing workflows. Assists higher-level staff in evaluating the results of digital collections projects. Works with higher-level staff to ensure all digital activities and plans for assigned portions of projects conform to or enhance current Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative (FADGI) standards and Library custodial practices and make optimum use of resources and staff expertise. Makes recommendations for future improvements.

Develops routine personal contacts to provide or exchange information and professional knowledge related to multiple projects.

Consults with supervisors and team leads to resolve problems or issues. Contributes to the planning and implementation of workflow procedures and provides input for setting production goals for assigned tasks or workflows. Assists others inside and outside the Section with resolving digitization questions related to assigned tasks or workflows.

Consults with supervisors and team leads to assist in implementing digitization projects. Offers suggestions and advice on operational and technical problems for assigned portions of projects. Serves as a point of contact for questions about assigned digitization projects and provides technical advice on assigned portions of digitization workflows, standards, practices, and equipment.

Analyzes existing information practices, precedents, and techniques and adapts previous approaches to solve information, organization, and access issues related to digitization and digital content within the assigned task or workflow; proposes routine modifications where required.

Performs assigned technical evaluations of hardware setup, performance, and image tonal and color accuracy; analyzes digitization equipment to ensure that all processes are performing properly.

The incumbent of this position will work a flextime work schedule.

This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Ability to create digital images and provide technical service and support. **

Ability to implement digital imaging projects. **

Ability to provide consultation or liaison duties.

Ability to research and analyze techniques and methods relating to digital content management and digital projects.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid at step one of the grade.
