Summary

- As a Science Assessor, interpret, evaluate, and analyze scientific data and other information for the development of human health and environmental assessments related to and from air pollutants;
- Communicate analyses, research results and technical advice and maintain professional contacts essential to the assessment process;
- Provide technical expertise, assistance and advice to support assessment efforts;
- Identify, plan and implement research to develop and/or improve methods used in assessments.
When entering a Federal job at a grade level lower than the highest promotion potential level, you may be promoted to more complex duties and work more independently, as your career progresses. NOTE: Career ladder promotions are not automatic, and all eligibility and qualifications requirements must be met in order to progress to the next grade level.
You will spend less than 25% of your work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation. Qualifications
In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:
To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as evaluating hazard and/or risk assessments related to the health effects that air pollutants have on humans and the environment; and preparing reports relating to chemical risk assessments and/or characterizations.
To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as evaluating hazard and/or risk assessments related to the health effects that air pollutants have on humans and the environment; and preparing reports relating to chemical risk assessments and/or characterizations; and developing scientific recommendations or approaches for human health effects resulting from air pollutants.
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Knowledge of toxicological studies on human health effects from air pollutants; 2) Skill in analyzing scientific data; 3) Skill in oral communication; 4) Skill in written communication; 5) Ability to provide technical expertise on the effects of air pollutants to peers and management; 6) Ability to synthesize and integrate scientific results into assessments.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.
Biologist: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.
Toxicologist: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.
