Duties

Help

  • Applying certified FAA, Industry or USAF technical expertise, maintains, modifies and certifies integrated radar, weather, air navigational and communications systems supporting the safe movement of air traffic in the National Airspace System in compliance with USAF and FAA established standards and safety requirements.
  • Maintains National Airspace System (NAS) automated ATC systems to ensure the systems are producing an end product acceptable for air traffic control purposes. Performs system security administration functions for ATC automated systems and maintains and modifies local ATC computer databases to conform to local airspace and NAS specification enhancing system effectiveness.
  • Modifies Airway Transportation equipment as prescribed by the FAA, DoD, or USAF and participates in project planning and execution.
  • Provides technical guidance, training, and assistance to other technicians, conducts on-the-job (OJT) training to apprentices in all phases of work, and performs Quality Assurance (QA) inspections.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

  • Must be qualified to drive government motor vehicles and qualify for flightline driving qualification
  • Must be able to distinguish colors and shades of colors. A pre-employment physical is required.
  • Indoor and outdoor work at equipment sites requires frequent walking, kneeling, bending, prolonged standing, working in strained and uncomfortable positions, and lifting/carrying moderately heavy items (15-50 lbs.).
  • Use of both arms and legs is required.
  • Disclosure of Political Appointments
  • Requires CPR certification.
  • Outdoor work sometimes performed in inclement weather or limited light conditions.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Requires knowledge of procedures for storage and handling of hazardous materials
  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
  • Potential exists for injuries such as electric shock, cuts and bruises, as well as burns caused by electrical or RF energy and soldering equipment.
  • Climbing of towers and ladders while using safety-climbing devices is required
  • Subject to overtime, telephone standby (on-call), and may be required to work an uncommon tour of duty which may include evenings, weekends, or holidays
  • A Secret Clearance is a condition for employment. The employee will be required to maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • This is a Testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to random drug testing.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions and IOR for Electronic Technical Series 0856.

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: This series covers technical positions supervising, leading, or performing work involving applying:

  • knowledge of the techniques and theories characteristic of electronics, such as a knowledge of basic electricity and electronic theory, algebra, and elementary physics;
  • knowledge of electronic equipment design, development, evaluation, testing, installation, and maintenance; and
  • knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, operations, design, characteristics, and functional use of a variety of types and models of electronic equipment and systems related to, but less than, a full professional knowledge of electronic engineering.

Electronics technicians may have gained experience assisting in work situations including: Maintenance, Installations, Fabrication, Testing and Evaluation/Research and Development, Sustainment, and Troubleshooting.

AND

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes comprehensive, intensive, and practical knowledge of, and extensive experience and skill in applying a wide range of concepts, practices, regulations, policies, and precedents; knowledge of analytical and diagnostic techniques, qualitative and quantitative techniques, and techniques for developing new or modified work methods, approaches, or procedures associated with air traffic control and weather equipment; ability to provide comprehensive management advisory and technical services on substantive functions and practices, develop innovative methods, approaches, or procedures, identify, and evaluate, and recommend appropriate solutions to resolve complex interrelated problems and issues; and skill required to formulate and present findings, briefings, project papers, status reports, and correspondence to foster understanding and acceptance of findings and recommendations.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  1. Expert knowledge and experience working with a wide variety of complex and integrated AT and C-E equipment, and associated support equipment. Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and practices.
  2. Expert knowledge of a wide range of electronic principles and practices, operating parameters, capabilities, and limitations of electronic systems associated with air traffic control and weather equipment; and of systems and component design, capabilities, configurations, limitations, and functional operation; and of various types of electronics logic.
  3. Expertise in the interpretation of technical data, analyzing problems in integrated/interfacing systems and in deducing the proper sequence of steps in troubleshooting system(s) circuits.
  4. Ability to rank priorities and make accurate and quick decisions that support the unit mission and the safety of flight regarding equipment operation. Ability to modify standard procedures, adapt equipment or techniques and make departures from previous approaches to solve technical problems or improve system performance
  5. Demonstrated ability to train others in a timely, certifiable and comprehensive manner, while adhering to all applicable guidance.
  6. Ability to use computer terminals to enter and extract data to maintain records and document actions. Knowledge of computer operating systems programs, e.g. Unix, Linux, Sun Solaris; network types; network topologies; transport devices e.g. hubs, routers, switches; and data communications equipment
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
