This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until January 4, 2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be March 1st 2023, with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled.

The Social Services Assistant position is found within the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MHRRTP); a program organizationally aligned within the Mental Health Division. MHRRTP is housed in Building 123. There are 7 subprograms within MHRRTP with a bed capacity of 125 residents in building 123, with approximately 90 staff providing treatment to male and female Veterans with complex medical, psychiatric, substance abuse, and homelessness problems.

  • The Social Services Assistant provides coverage 24 hours a day/7 days a week on a rotational basis.
  • Performing administrative tasks such as receiving, orienting, and discharging residents, maintaining and enforcing discipline, safety, health and security, measures of the residents according to policy and procedures of the medical center, MHRRTP programs, and interdisciplinary treatment decisions.
  • Processing passes, assuring linen is available, monitoring resident logs, keys are accounted for, and assisting residents with room problems.
  • Orients newly admitted residents by explaining domiciliary policies, procedures and expectations.
  • Assists residents regarding problems and/or compliance and informs treatment team members.
  • Performs hazardous items checks of resident's belongings upon admission and as needed and documents findings in appropriate location.
  • Escorts patients to/from main hospital.
  • Conducts bed checks and rounds in accordance with MHRRTP guidelines.
  • Breathalyzes residents returning from pass, unauthorized absence and residents suspected of being intoxicated and documents findings in the appropriate location.
  • Receives telephone calls from beneficiaries, relatives, friends, other VA staff/facilities, service organizations, community agencies relating to residents.
  • Attends and participates in the domiciliary team meetings as needed and shift reports. Presents information on observations and information obtained during patient interactions.
  • Conducts Environment of Care rounds/inspections to check physical building equipment, health and safety, and security problems per MHRRTP policy.
  • Initiates appropriate corrective action including work orders or calling for emergency repairs.
  • Directs appropriate response to fire drills and/or fire or disaster situations.
  • Takes appropriate action when residents' behavior violates domiciliary policies and documents these incidents in the appropriate location.
  • Participates in special projects and initiatives and performs special assignments within scope of duties and responsibilities.


Work Schedule: 11:30pm to 8:00am with alternate weekends OR 7:30am to 4:00pm with alternate weekends OR 3:30pm to 12:00 am with alternate weekends.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/05/2024.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: Handling conflicts and problems; Interviewing and listening to patients; Documenting patient information in data bases; Conducting individual and group orientation; Using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation; Working knowledge of medical terminology, Microsoft Office products, CPRS and VISTA.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
  • Counselor in a youth summer camp.
  • Instructor in a training program for the development of job skills.
  • Work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew.
  • Group activities leader in the Armed Services.
  • Unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group in a boarding school or other residential facility.
  • Aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff in such fields as personnel (private or government), employment guidance in a vocational or academic institution, social service, or manpower development.
  • Aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities.
  • Aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs.
  • Group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs
OR,
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that a) included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the position; (b) included a major in social behavior, human behavior, or health care or; (c) was supplemented by specialized experience as described above for GS-4. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.     This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.   • Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree. (Transcripts Required)

Physical Requirements: The work of this position requires on-site observation and involves walking, standing, bending, stooping, and carrying of light items.
