  • Perform technical duties in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment evaluating samples, and preparing stock solutions to support research projects.
  • Alter, adapt, and develop new techniques or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research projects.
  • Plan, organize, and execute the details of a wide variety of projects related to using principles in biological science.
  • Apply policies and programs to layout schedules and organize operational projects.
  • Search for literature pertinent to area of research for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse.

  • Interpret research data and summarizes results in manuscripts or reports.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Minimum Qualifications Requirements:
For the GS-7: You must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as 3 out of 4 of the following:

  • Performing technical duties in laboratory and/or field settings for research including taking measurements, handling data, establishing plots, preparing samples (e.g., DNA extraction, microbial isolation), following strict field and laboratory procedures, and researching topics to improve methods.
  • Keeping detailed records of experimental data and locating and compiling data from various sources.
  • Using a wide variety of equipment (e.g., centrifuge, micropipette, autoclave), supplies, and laboratory chemicals and stock solutions for field and laboratory research.
  • Conducting data analysis and creating summary reports and figures using statistical and genetic software (e.g., R, Geneious).
OR
Successful completion of one full year of graduate education (18 semester hours or equivalent) if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (e.g., forestry, ecology, plant pathology, entomology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, botany, agriculture). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

OR
Combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position, and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

For the GS-08: You must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as 3 out of 4 of the following:
  • Performing moderately complex and recurring techniques and making improvements in field and laboratory procedures related to biological science research, in field and/or laboratory settings, using a variety of specialized equipment (e.g., bio safety cabinet, thermos cyclers)
  • Keeping detailed records of experimental data and locating pertinent research literature for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse.
  • Maintaining, calibrating, and modifying complex or specialized equipment (e.g., centrifudge, bio safety cabinet, thermos cyclers, micropipette) and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Tabulating, statistically analyzing, and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages.
OR
Successful completion two full years (36 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level education or master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (e.g., forestry, ecology, plant pathology, entomology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, botany, agriculture). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

OR
Combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position (in excess of 18 semester/27 quarter hours), and specialized experience as described above. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

For the GS-09: You must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as ALL of the following:
  • Adapting, modifying, or developing new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of biological science related research projects, including selecting appropriate methods and procedures for carrying project plans to completion.
  • Collecting, preparing, evaluating, and verifying samples and experimental date and maintaining records and data from various sources.
  • Maintaining, calibrating, and modifying complex or specialized equipment (e.g., centrifudge, bio safety cabinet, thermos cyclers, micropipette) and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Tabulating, statistically analyzing, and interpreting research data using personal/cluster computers and software packages and summarizing results for inclusion in manuscripts or reports.
OR
Two full years (36 semester/54 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level education or master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (e.g., forestry, ecology, plant pathology, entomology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, botany, agriculture). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

OR
Combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position (in excess of 18 semester/27 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Work Experience: Your resume must clearly document the following for each block of work experience; the beginning day, month and year the work assignment started and ended; the hours worked per week; position title, and series and grade if applicable; and description of duties performed. You will be evaluated in accordance with the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. You will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire.
