The NIH CIO and Director, OCIO, serves as the authoritative resource and primary advisor to the Director of NIH with responsibility for NIH-wide information and information technology (IT) policies and oversight; partners with the Director, Center for Information Technology to plan and set the IT direction for the agency; provides oversight of the NIH information security program; assures NIH compliance with Federal laws, regulations, policies, and guidance; and oversees the activities of the OCIO .
The OCIO has four operational divisions: the Information Security and Awareness Office, the IT Policy and Review Office, the IT Acquisition Services Office, and the IT Architecture Office. Given its broad NIH responsibilities, the Information Security and Awareness Office includes three sub-divisions responsible for supporting the NIH information security program: 1. Governance, Risk, and Compliance for policy and legal conformance; 2. Infrastructure and Data Protection through the deployment of NIH wide cyber-based technologies; 3. Cybersecurity Operations (supporting NIH with 24-hour, 7 day per week, 365-day operations). This program is responsible for managing incidents/threats under HHS and US Department of Homeland Security guidance.
The OCIO has a workforce of approximately 50 Federal staff and 125 contractors and an annual budget of approximately $70 million.
