This position establishes a formal clinical informatics leadership presence in the field at Northern Indiana Health Care System (NIHCS). The position is located at one of the two main campuses and supports four geographically distant Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). This formal presence ensures that knowledge of informatics is infused throughout NIHCS, and that health information issues affecting the delivery of care are clearly articulated and raised appropriately for action. The focus of this position is to optimize effectiveness of patient care delivery and systems management in support of the NIHCS mission and goals. As the CHIO at NIHCS, the incumbent is part of a local team charged with actively and vocally supporting the goal of establishing a workable local informatics infrastructure for NIHCS, and for advancing local solutions for managing workflow and knowledge in clinical systems. The CHIO will participate in VISN activities to ensure that informatics is established as a professional domain, and that best practices are identified or developed and made available throughout NIHCS.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Play key role in using the capability of the VA clinical information systems to assist practitioners in doing the right things for the right patients at the right time.
Will be expected to provide direct patient care within NIHCS for 30-60% of the available work time as well as oversight of Care in the Community.
Evaluate clinical computing systems; analyze and evaluate the effect of interventions on health outcomes.
Expand and enhance patient access to patient information through the various initiatives, and further the effective and efficient use of medical information systems for patients.
Coordinate information management support for clinical activities NIHCS by participating collaboratively with staff to design, implement, and evaluate the clinical information systems configuration, and the capabilities that will be used. Work closely with the NIHCS' Office of Information and Technology (OI&T), Biomedical engineering, Medical, Nursing and other clinical staff.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
