This position is located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) with one vacancy in Boulder, CO.

This position is located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) with one vacancy in Boulder, CO.
As a Research Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
Perform critical research using remote sensing data, ocean and atmosphere re-analyses, and theoretical constructs to effectively target specific problems in marine science, with a primary focus on US coastal waters.
Apply global earth system models, regional ocean models, and observation based process understanding to advance the prediction of environmental conditions in the ocean and coastal regions.
Serve as a principal investigator and the team lead for scientists to plan and coordinate studies of physical processes and environmental conditions that impact marine ecosystems.
NOTE: These duties are described at the full performance level of ZP-4; the ZP-3 is developmental leading to such performance.
This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel Systems (CAPS). This system replace the Federal GS pay plan and structure. Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan, and pay band.
The ZP-3 is equivalent to the GS-11/12. The ZP-4 is equivalent to the GS-13/14.
NOTE:
* A one year probationary period may be required.
* Payment of relocation expenses is not authorized.
* This position is not in the bargaining unit.

Qualifications
Qualification requirements in the vacancy announcements are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook, which contains federal qualification standards. To qualify for the 1301 series:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS: This position requires applicants to meet a Basic Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of specialized experience OR substitution of education for experience OR combination (if applicable) in order to be found minimally qualified. You MUST meet one of the following basic education requirements:
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of education an experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
To qualify at the ZP-3 OR GS-11 level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-2 OR GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Collaborating with physical oceanography, biogeochemical and/or fishery scientists to plan, coordinate, and develop studies of physical processes;
Researching the use of remote sensing data to effectively target specific problems in marine science, with a primary focus on US coastal waters; and
Assisting with research proposals.
OR
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience as described above. Note: Only graduate-level education in excess of one year is qualifying for combination of education and experience.
To qualify at the ZP-4 OR GS-13 level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-3 OR GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Collaborating with biogeochemical and fishery scientists to plan, coordinate, and develop studies of physical processes;
Leading research about the use of remote sensing data to effectively target specific problems in marine science, with a primary focus on US coastal waters; and
Writing research proposals and contributed to peer reviewed journals.
Education
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
