Duties

Help
  • Prepares and cooks a variety of menu items.
  • Follows recipes to prepare items such as soups, stews, casseroles, gravies, sauces, hot cereals, syrups, meatloaf, meatballs, hamburgers, and croquettes.
  • Adjusts recipes for larger or smaller quantities.
  • Slices meat by hand and by mechanical means, to specific requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-Verify) check.
  • Satisfactorily complete a minimum of 4 hours of initial food sanitation and safety training is required within 30 days of employment and a minimum of 4 hours refresher training annually.
  • Satisfactorily complete all pre-employment checks in accordance with AR 215-3 to include a medical examination and credit check.
  • Complete a Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card for physical access to federally controlled facilitates.
  • Must be willing to accept a varying or rotating shift to include early mornings, days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment. (Time of appointment is 2 weeks after submitting a completed application packet).
  • Ability to continually walk, stand, stoop, reach, push, pull and bend. Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally over 40 pounds with the assistance of other workers or a lifting devices.

Qualifications

  1. A minimum of 6 months of work experience preparing a variety of menu items including regular and special diet entrees and dessert items fairly independently (without more than normal supervision).
  2. Skill/experience in working with professional kitchen appliances and equipment.
  3. Ability to communicate both verbally and written in English.

Skill and Knowledge:
Basic knowledge of food preparation principles and practical understanding of the physical processes that occur in cooking. Knowledge of proper cooking temperatures and preparation methods for a variety of foods. Ability to schedule and coordinate preparation of a number of different foods in order to ensure that they are ready for service at the appropriate mealtime. Knowledge of food borne illnesses, food safety, and proper storage methods for hot and cold food items in order to prevent loss or illness due to spoilage. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, particularly standard recipes, and detailed cooking instructions. Skill in operating and cleaning a wide variety of food service equipment, including special equipment for the preparation of large volume items. Skill in carving, preparing garnishes, and assembling attractive platters, salads, and other food presentations.

This position is a Flexible (Flex) position and there are 0 guaranteed hours per week. Flex employees are not entitled to leave or benefits however, there is no upper limit to the number of hours a flexible employee may work (subject to overtime obligation and work scheduling requirements).
