EMERGENCY ASSIGNMENT: Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
EXCEPTED SERVICE: This is a full-time position in the Mobile Emergency Response Support (MERS) Detachment. MERS positions are in the excepted service. Employees will not acquire civil service status, but are eligible for standard and optional benefits.
In this position, you will work as a Telecommunications Specialist (RF). Typical assignments include:
Plannings, designing, directing the deployment, placement, installation, integration, operation, maintenance and tear down of a large variety of mobile/transportable wide band and narrow band radio frequency systems with their associated ancillary equipment.
Providing bench level repair, alignment and maintenance to Land Mobile Radio equipment.
Performing integration and evaluation of off-the-shelf and prototype radio frequency systems and sub-systems with voice, data, and video telecommunications equipment and tests for compatibility with FEMA standard systems.
Providing informal training to technical and/or nontechnical government personnel on the deployment, set-up, installation, integration, operation, maintenance, fault isolation, restoration and tear down of complex telecommunications systems and equipment.
Initiating and coordinating with FEMA, other government agencies, and non-government personnel, in the restoration of voice, data, and video telecommunications circuits.
Promotion Potential: Future promotions will be dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and administrative approval.

You qualify for this position at the GS-12 level (starting salary $94,199) if you possess the following:One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-11) in the Federal Service. This experience may have been gained in the federal government, a state or local government, a non-profit organization, the private sector, or as a volunteer; however, your resume must clearly describe at least one year of specialized experience. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Planning, designing, directing the deployment, placement, integration, operation, maintenance, and tear down of a wide variety of mobile/transportation radio frequency and telecommunications systems and equipment, such as bench level repair, alignment, and programming of P-25 standard land mobile radio equipment.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
