Duties

Help
  • Provide advice on genetic counseling to physicians and other medical professionals.
  • Organize and integrate complex medical, genetic, psychosocial, and psychophysical information relative to a patient or a genetic problem.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries regarding candidacy for genetic research protocols .
  • Screen families for appropriateness of available genetic testing.
  • Provide input towards new approaches to patient service based on past experience and newly learned techniques.
  • Design and conduct clinical and translational research as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Associate Investigator that facilitates understanding of the psychosocial impact of genetic testing.
  • Manage research projects, including preparing protocols and consent forms, recruitment of patients, planning scientific meetings, coordinating team members and activities, and facilitating communication amongst staff/patients/other parties.
  • Perform reviews of relevant medical/scientific literature.
  • Ensure that all work assignments of the team are carried out to achieve specific tasks, produce work products and services, and meet program and goals.

Qualifications

You qualify at the Lead Genetic Counselor GS-14 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements:

Education Requirement:
You must possess a Bachelor's degree, or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained).

AND

Additional Experience
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing genetic counseling services to families and individuals participating in clinical research protocols; designing and conducting clinical or translational research on the psychosocial impact of genetic testing; managing research projects and protocols; and coordinating genetic counseling and clinical research with other scientific, technical, and program staff.
