As a Physical Security Specialist at the GS-0080-12 level, some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Conducting testing of security and screening equipment (e.g., walk-thru metal detectors, x -ray machines, explosive trace detection units, handheld metal detectors, duress alarms, cameras, intercoms, entry control packages, etc.).
  • Conveying complex security requirements and recommendations.
  • Planning, scheduling, coordinating, and carrying out Judicial Security work.

Must pass a pre-employment security investigation and drug screening.

Must complete an initial online questionnaire and additional assessment(s).

This is a Testing Designated Position and is subject to random drug testing.

May be required to successfully complete a trial/probationary period.

Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

Status candidates must meet time-in-grade requirements (52 weeks at the next lower grade level).

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

Qualifications

GS-12 TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 grade level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 grade level. (Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted).

You may qualify at the GS-0080-12 level, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level of the Federal Service that includes: 1) Inspecting and ensuring the proper installation, function, and maintenance of security equipment; 2) Assessing difficult and complex security problems, including analyzing alternatives to recommend corrective actions; and3) Testing security and screening equipment to evaluate security vulnerabilities.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
