Duties

Help
  • Conduct feasibility studies by assessing the phylogenetic status of target weeds with regard to beneficial and non-target plant species from literature sources, expert consultations, and molecular analysis.
  • Plan, locate, and acquire promising natural enemies of selected weeds via foreign exploration and ensure their consignment, colonization, management, and pre-release efficacy in containment under quarantine conditions.
  • This requires literature searches, establishing foreign collaborations, conducting extensive ground surveys, obtaining regulatory approvals, arranging expediting importations, and developing effective rearing methodologies.
  • Quantify ecological risk posed by candidate organisms through life history studies, physiological host range testing, and niche modeling.
  • The incumbent's identification and accurate assessment of potential risks are critical to an environmentally-sound decision-making process which may have wide ranging repercussions.
  • Develop fundamental knowledge of weed biology and ecology, including the physiological and ecological bases for population dynamics of the weed and evaluating the potential effects of global climate change on weed expansion.
  • Establish biological control agents in the field and evaluate their control efficacy.
  • Assess impacts of exotic plant invasions on ecosystems including aboveground components like plant and invertebrate abundance and diversity, and belowground components like nutrient cycling and storage.
