Duties

Help
  • Assist in grounds maintenance using lawn mower, weed eater, snow blower and shovel.
  • Clean offices, storerooms, corridors, stairways, and other areas.
  • Keep a stock of cleaning materials and equipment needed to do the work.
  • Report to supervisor when more materials are needed or when equipment is in need of repair or replacement.
  • Handle and control heavy powered equipment, and minor maintenance on this equipment.
  • Perform custodial worker duties safely from a variety of heights.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 02/06/2023. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Custodial Worker without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration.

Working Conditions:

  • The work is usually performed in labs, greenhouse, offices, common public areas, warehouses, or outdoor facilities. The work involves exposure to strong cleaning solutions, disagreeable odors, and exposure to hot and cold conditions, high noise, and vibrations levels, and occasionally to harmful biological, chemical, and physical agents. Protective devices such as gloves, goggles, face mask, or respirators and immunizations may be required. The health status of personnel may be monitored periodically using biologic and serologic tests and physical examinations if required.
Physical Efforts:
  • The work involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners, dry mops and running powered scrubbers and buffers. This job requires continuous standing, bending, stooping, and reaching and frequent lifting and emptying of wastebaskets. Moderate physical effort is used occasionally in moving, setting up and working from ladders in order to clean windows and lights.
  • The incumbent must be able to operate and control floor maintenance machines, move, and control heavy equipment and carry, set up, and work from ladders. Frequently lift and move objects weighing 40 pounds and occasionally over 50 pounds. Regularly shovels snow off of walks. Will be required to work with a large variety of cleaning agents. This job will require bending and lifting and moderate to heavy physical effort when mopping or moving furniture.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
