Summary

This position is located with Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, Plains Area, Stored Product Insect and Engineering Research Unit in Manhattan, KS.

In this position, you will actively participate in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of molecular biology laboratory techniques related to the study of gene function in stored product insects. Work will be conducted in the lab (90%) and field (10%).

Duties

Help
  • Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records.
  • Uses principles of biological science (e.g., plant pathology, plant physiology, entomology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, etc.) for the research being conducted.
  • Actively participates in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment common to the assigned area of work.
  • Adapts, modifies, or develops new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project.
  • Performs a full range of techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment and automated systems.
  • Maintains, calibrates, and modifies complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.

GS-07 Specialized Experience: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience

  • Assisting in a project or experiment by collecting and preparing insect or plant samples for routine DNA/RNA extractions;
  • Collecting and maintaining records of experimental data; and;
  • Operating laboratory equipment

GS-07 Education: One full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Plant, and Entomology, Animal Science, Insect Science, Nematology, or Genetics.

Combination of education and specialized experience: A combination of education and experience as described above.


GS-08 Specialized Experience: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience:
  • Participating in insect or plant research by performing routine DNA and RNA extractions, PCR and qPCR analysis;
  • Evaluating insect samples;
  • Keeping records of experimental data;
  • Assisting in the development and improvement of techniques and procedures within the experiment process; and
  • Performing complex laboratory techniques.

GS-08 Education: Two full years of graduate education or a Master's Degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Plant, and Entomology, Animal Science, Insect Science, Nematology, or Genetics.

GS-09 Specialized Experience: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience:
  • Participating in all phases of insect or plant research including the design and initial planning of the experiment;
  • Collecting, preparing, and evaluating insect or plant samples; and
  • Compiling, maintaining, and summarizing experimental data in reports.

GS-09 Education: Two full years of graduate education or a Master's Degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Plant, and Entomology, Animal Science, Insect Science, Nematology, or Genetics.

Physical Demands:
The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.

Work Environment:
The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.
