Duties

Help
  • Interact with visitors and members of the local communities and provide educational and interpretive programs to the public.
  • Assist in inspecting facilities like campgrounds, scenic rivers, cultural resource sites, waysides, and other recreation facilities. These facilities are in remote environments and sometimes require field living conditions for multiple days.
  • Conduct motorized and non-motorized river patrols as a part of a team (not the boat operator).
  • Clear brush and trails, collect trash, and trim and plant trees.
  • Assist in the performance of day-to-day operations at a customer use area that provides facilities such as campgrounds, picnic areas, trails, and/or other specialized recreational opportunities.
  • GS-07 Rangers work independently, receiving assignments of substantial variety for which established precedents are not fully applicable.
  • GS-05 rangers work within well-established programs but have some responsibility for initiating, developing, or modifying work methods.

Qualifications

GS 05: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: 1) Park/Public lands facility maintenance and janitorial duties; 2) law enforcement and/or investigative work; 3) Archeological or historical preservation research work.; 4) forestry and/or fire prevention and fire suppression work in parks, recreation or conservation areas; and 5) management, assistant or program specialist work involving the development/implementation of protection, conservation, and/or management of park or similar operations.

Education: Successfully completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study in or that included 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

GS 07: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: trail and kiosk construction and repair, construction of small buildings in remote parks or recreation areas, interpretational leadership with coworkers and the public to include enhancement of interpretational panels and signs, assessment of safety hazards in recreation areas, repairs of hand pumps, small landscape equipment, lawn mowers and hand tools. Use of All terrain vehicles, 4-wheel drive trucks, and trailer operations.

Education: Successfully completed at least one year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in a related field such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavior sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education.

Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.

Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. Will work long days if necessary, which may include working on holidays, weekends, and evenings. Will lift and carry equipment and supplies for extended distances.

Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration.
