Summary

The purpose of the position is to cook simple recipes to support the Kitchen Services Department through food preparation, food services, and cleaning/sanitation requirements, in order to provide adequate, acceptable, nutrient, safe meals to residents of the facility. Hours of duty are rotating shifts and may include evenings, holiday and weekend work. This position reports directly to the Food Service Worker Supervisor.

Duties

Help

Performs food preparation and cooking tasks for all types of hot and cold menu items, using appropriate quantity cooking methods, prepares foods to preserve nutritional value, color, palatability, acceptability, and presents it attractively. Utilizing standard recipes, follows measuring and preparation instructions. Makes recipes modifications to meet changes in number of servings required. Prepares food for diets according to menu. Makes final checks of assembled trays and nourishments that are prepared. Maintains a sanitary, safe work environment during food production by using proper personal hygiene, and food sanitization methods. Scrapes, soaks, wash, sanitizes and stores large cooking utensils and plans coordinates, and assists with cleaning activities according to established cleaning schedules. Participates in ordering, receiving and storing food and supplies. Monitors and makes inventory of food and supplies.

Measles, Mumps and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To qualify for this position you must meet the following screen-out element:

  • Ability to do the work without more than normal supervision.
  • You may meet this requirement if you have experience and/or training to perform a full range of simple cooking by preparing and cooking items that require little or no processing.
  • Prepare food by peeling, chopping, grinding, paring, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring, or breading; weigh, measure, and assemble ingredients for regular and modified menu items; set up and replenish a salad bar; portion foods for distribution and meal service; and cover, date, and store leftovers according to established procedures.
  • This screen-out element is a critical self-assessment of the applicant's experience and is essential for satisfactory job performance.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the above, qualifications will also be determined by comparing your application to the responses on the Assessment Questionnaire against the guidelines found in the Job Qualification System for Food Preparation And Serving Family, WG-7400 series. The questionnaire will assess how your knowledge, skills, and abilities match what the position calls for.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a 6 month service agreement will be required.
