Duties

Help

As a Public Affairs Specialist at the GS-1035-14 for the Office of Disaster Assistance (ODA), Headquarters (HQ), some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Coordinating and maintaining a cooperative relationship with private sector and non-profit organization to ensure smooth partnership.
  • Assisting in the establishment of national policies, goals, and operating procedures for the effective management and delivery of disaster assistance program initiatives.
  • Providing project guidance with sound analytical skills and judgment in responding to all business as well as media inquiries and creative vision related to the development of multimedia products.
  • Monitoring all media to include newspaper, business trade magazines, radio, private sector organizations, and television coverage of disaster programs and provides supplemental information to correct any irregular or inaccurate media information as necessary.
  • Keeping abreast of legislative, regulatory, and programmatic changes, and their impact on the program as well as any repercussions on grant/loan applicants or recipients.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with stakeholders involved in public affairs activities and disaster operations.
  • Determining the communications product needs related to disaster assistance and recovery programs through videos, brochures, fact sheets, speeches, talking points, press releases, newsletters, public service announcements, PowerPoint presentations, slides, compact discs, and videos.
  • Developing new and/or modified campaigns and communication strategies that convey
    information to various private sector audiences as well as public sector audience when necessary.
  • Writing or editing correspondence for senior leadership addressed to Congressional offices and other public and private organizations about general disaster program information.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • This position is not included in a bargaining unit.
  • The salary range above reflects the employee's base salary. Locality Pay will be added based on the location of the employee's residence.
  • This is a Permanent position.
  • Mandatory Overtime: In order to respond quickly and efficiently to disaster survivors, substantial compensated overtime hours may be required while on assignment (up to seven days a week and twelve to fourteen hours a day).

Experience: To receive credit, you must indicate the month and year as well as the average hours worked per week for each employer. You must address the specific specialized experience required for each grade level of this position on your resume or application or you will be rated "Ineligible" for that grade level.

GS-14: To qualify you must have at least 1 full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GS-13 level in the Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skill, and ability to perform successfully in this position. This experience may have been gained in a Non-Federal service position. In addition, this Specialized Experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Implementing organizational plans, mission, team strategies, goals, objectives, and work plans.
  • Explaining an organization's commercial (business) lending and/or financial programs, policies, and procedures (1) either to the public as a member of the media (print, radio, and/or television), or (2) to the media (print, radio and/or television) as a representative of a lending and/or financial organization. [Consumer and credit card lending is not commercial (business) lending. Media experience must have communicated directly to the public, e.g., direct written or broadcast reporting.]
  • Creating original content for official social media platforms and monitoring the content on various social media platforms.
