Duties

Help
  • Locate field sites using written directions, aerial photographs, topographic maps, compass and Global Positioning System (GPS).
  • Take an active role in promoting field crew safety (proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), aviation operations, safety briefings, etc.)
  • Use botanical keys to identify plants.
  • Record all measurements utilizing a personal data recorder.
  • Use Geographic Information System (GIS) to interpret remotely-sensed data and produce maps.
  • Evaluate quality of data collected to ensure standardized protocols are used and measurements are repeatable.
  • Collaborate with information management staff to set-up, test, and fix errors with data collection software and hardware.
  • Duties listed are at the full performance level GS09.

  • To maintain employment in this position the incumbent must receive a negative pre-certification drug test result and will be enrolled in random drug testing while employed for this position.
  • The incumbent must be able to pass a minimum background investigation, pass firearm classroom training, pass the shooting proficiency test and be enrolled in the random drug testing pool while employed in this position.

Basic Education Requirement for Biological Science Series (0401):

Degree: Biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related graduate level education in the amounts listed below.

For the GS-7 level you must possess one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 level. Specialized experience is defined as all of the following:

  • Assisting with the management of ecological monitoring projects (including building schedules, logistical planning, and execution of work);
  • Collecting forestry, botanical, and geographic measurements; obtaining data on tree growth, forest type, stand size and stand age; habitat typing, plant identification, and evaluation of forest health indicators.
  • Producing routine reports and summaries of field visits; interpreting standard procedures, and ensuring that data collection is accurate, repeatable and in compliance with established protocol.

One year of graduate-level education directly related to the work of the position which is forest inventory and analysis
OR
Superior Academic Achievement. A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience listed above.

For the GS-9 level you must possess one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as 3 out of 4 of the following:
  • Managing forest inventory or resource monitoring projects (including, development of flexible work plans that include anticipated workforce needs, time and cost estimates);
  • Analyzing forest inventory monitoring data for accuracy and compliance with established protocol; utilizing field observations, aerial imagery, and historical site information for land use classification;
  • Serving as subject matter expert in forest inventory field data collection to answer questions about methods and findings and to train others; and communicating with state, federal, tribal, and/or private organizations to enlist cooperation and support in research activities.
  • Experience overseeing employees includes: establishing expectations, making recommendations for performance standards and measures, and identifying/providing developmental training as necessary.
OR
Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree directly related to the work of the position which is forest inventory and analysis
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level).

The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Work Environment: This is a field-going position which requires frequent physical exertion such as walking over rough or rocky terrain while carrying a 45-lb field pack. Work may be performed in inclement weather (cold, rain, snow), on steep, slippery, and/or brushy slopes, and in the presence of moose, bear, wolves, and biting insects. During the field season, living quarters can vary from remote camps to hotels to research vessels. Travel to field sites is regularly accomplished utilizing small aircraft including helicopters.

Additional information

Remote with location restriction. Must be located within Alaska or Pacific time zones. Duty station (home) must be within 8 hours travel of Anchorage, AK. Travel to Anchorage must be commercially available or by private vehicle, 7 days per week. Incumbent is expected to be in travel status 100% of the time between approximately May 1st and September 30th each year. Travel during this time is expected to be 16 day trips with approximately 12 days at home during this time period. Between October 1st and April 30th, one to three trips of approximately 1 week per trip will be required. Final determination of the duty station will be made by the selecting official at the time of the job offer.
