Duties

Help
  • Prepare, evaluate, and conduct progressively more complex biological analyses of wildlife ecology and behavior in as it relates to land and water resource projects.
  • Process permit applications to ensure compliance with appropriate federal law.
  • Design and assist in implementing habitat improvement and restoration projects for the field office or state office in coordination with other more senior wildlife biologists or the supervisor.
  • Assists more senior biologists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of resource management plansMonitor and survey sensitive species and their habitats.
  • Identify the impacts to wildlife habitat and threatened and endangered species by other resource activities.
  • Serve on an interdisciplinary team that will address wildlife and other natural resource issues and problems.
  • Collaborate with other specialists and the supervisor that are responsible for writing and reviewing the biological input to environmental assessments, biological assessments, protective stipulations, and resource management plans.
  • Participate and provide input on wildlife projects to the wildlife portion of the annual work plan.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience.

Basic Requirements:
Degree: biological science that included:
At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; And
At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.

Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

For GS-5: You must meet the Basic Requirements as described above.

For GS-7: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level: Examples of specialized experience but not limited to: Assisting with the collection of field data on wildlife habitats and vegetation; Interpreting aerial photos to determine vegetation types; Assembling biological and vegetation use data from records to determine past wildlife and livestock use; Assisting with the classification and evaluation of vegetations and soil to determine suitable habitats and ranges for wildlife.

Education: One (1) year of graduate-level education in a related field that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the Fish Biologist position;

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.): See OPM Quals Standard-General Policies E (4)(f), S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled

For GS-9: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level. Examples of specialized experience but not limited to: Assisting with the collection of field data on wildlife habitats and vegetation; Interpreting aerial photos to determine vegetation types; Assembling biological and vegetation use data from records to determine past wildlife and livestock use; Assisting with the classification and evaluation of vegetations and soil to determine suitable habitats and ranges for wildlife.

2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

A combination of graduate level education (beyond 18 semester hours) and specialized experience that is directly related to this position that together meets the qualification requirements for this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Some of the work is performed in an office setting. However, in order to gather samples and complete monitoring activities, much of the work requires the individual to walk, ride horseback, or ride vehicles over rough terrain, and perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples.

Work Environment: Some of the work is performed in an office setting, however, considerable field work is required to complete projects. This may include camping or relatively long term exposure to inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to discomfort from harsh weather, insects, or vegetation. The incumbent may also be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemicals and other physical hazards.

Education

Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
