Summary

In this position, you will develop and implement a research program that includes evaluating/quantifying impacts of management practices and disturbances on the ecology of semiarid/subalpine rangeland resulting in applicable solutions that are dynamic with regard to climatic variability and change.
Develop a research program to evaluate and quantify the impacts of management practices and disturbances on the ecology of sagebrush and subalpine rangelands.
Develop and deliver applicable landscape-scale solutions and/or technologies for land-management agencies and livestock producers.
Analyze data, write manuscripts, and disseminate results and technical advice to stakeholders.
Coordinate cooperative research efforts with other ARS labs, federal and state agencies, universities, and the private sector.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements: Degree: range management; or a related discipline that included at least 42 semester hours in a combination of the plant, animal, and soil sciences, and natural resources management, as follows:
- Range Management: At least 18 semester hours of course work in range management, including courses in such areas as basic principles of range management, range plants, range ecology, range inventories and studies, range improvements, and ranch or rangeland planning.
- Directly Related Plant, Animal, and Soil Sciences: At least 15 semester hours of directly related courses in the plant, animal, and soil sciences, including at least one course in each of these three scientific areas, i.e., plant, animal, and soil sciences. Courses in such areas as plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, animal nutrition, livestock production, and soil morphology or soil classification are acceptable.
- Related Resource Management Studies: At least 9 semester hours of course work in related resource management subjects, including courses in such areas as wildlife management, watershed management, natural resource or agricultural economics, forestry, agronomy, forages, and outdoor recreation management. OR Combination of education and experience: at least 42 semester hours of course work in the combination of plant, animal, and soil sciences and natural resources management shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Additional Requirements
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
GS-12:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are: conducting field-based research related to rangeland and(or) animal science in a field setting; applying on-ground and remote-sensing technologies and methods to measure and model vegetation dynamics in response to disturbance; analyzing experimental data to produce peer-reviewed manuscripts; and working with internal and external stakeholders.
GS-13:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: planning and developing original, field-based research programs related to rangeland and animal (grazing livestock) science program; publishing original research that includes results generated from on-ground and remote-sensing technologies used to measure and model vegetation dynamics and(or) livestock herbivory in grazing systems; analyzing quantitative data to produce peer-reviewed manuscripts published in high-quality journals; collaborating with universities and other institutions/groups to develop programs and determine objectives in support of rangeland and grazing systems research; and delivering meaningful solutions to internal and external stakeholders.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
