Duties

Help
  • Participates in developing innovative concepts and approaches for delivering unique, activity specific or broad, ongoing public affairs strategies.
  • Identifies and conducts activities to increase congressional, and state, local and tribal officials' awareness of Census Bureau programs.
  • Facilitates communication with internal and external customers to support and strengthen Census Bureau and Department of Commerce objectives.
  • Identifies and implements techniques to strengthen and expand media relations to foster a dynamic, responsive partnership with media outlets to augment and highlight Census Bureau programs and products.
  • Participates in the planning and presentation of conferences, seminars, and news conferences.

Specialized Experience: For the GS-13, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: developing and implementing communication strategies and tactics to inform the public and news media of surveys, data releases and important information through news products and events; creating messaging and talking points for staff and executives to prepare for media and public engagements and to develop related materials for public distribution; staffing executives for media and public engagements; handling media inquiries and logistics for media interviews and public engagements; problem solving and managing workload with minimal supervision.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer.
