What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

Salary: $77,898 (Step 01) to $101,263 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

The incumbent of this position is entitled to a cost-of-living allowance (COLA) of 2.01% for 2023 in addition to basic salary.

Duties

Help

As a Physical Science Technician within the Volcano Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Maintains the existing volcano monitoring networks of analog/digital equipment and relay stations by either the AVO, HVO, CVO, CalVO, YVO, or VDAP.
  • Keeps proper records, including, but not limited to, station maintenance histories, field files, landowner information, and equipment/station databases.
  • Proper continuous operation (24/7/365) is monitored, and defects are addressed quickly to minimize impacts on the whole system.
  • Develops methods and procedures for the use of test equipment and computer systems to detect, troubleshoot, and fix problems.
  • Must exercise independent initiative and resourcefulness in solving problems.
  • Plans, designs, and fabricates electronic and mechanical systems as part of the installation of new seismic stations, relay stations, and the relocation or upgrade of existing stations.
Physical Demands: Long periods of standing and detailed electronics work are required. Field work requires moderately strenuous physical demands including stooping, reaching, lifting, and carrying heavy objects, climbing, digging, mixing cement, walking in uneven terrain, and mountaineering, all of which may occur in adverse conditions. Some work requires special training for particularly hazardous conditions including flying in special use aircraft, climbing towers, operation of lifts and cranes, operation of heavy machinery to include portable rigs, backhoes, and other equipment, and entering confined spaces. Long travel days in a vehicle, aircraft, or marine vessel are not uncommon.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting, electronics lab, computer rooms, and in the field where it is common to work in dense urban environments but also harsh, desolate, and mountainous environments. Long drives on unpaved roads are sometimes necessary to reach field sites. Travel by boat, helicopter, UTV, ATV or other non-conventional travel is often required. Some overnight travel is expected. This position will occasionally require working in potentially hazardous environments. These include proximity to potentially active volcanoes, electrical shock, falls from high towers, enclosed spaces, tight space in, on top of, and under buildings near base isolators, corrosive chemicals, extreme weather conditions, sling loading and other logistical loading of aircraft, etc. The incumbent will be trained in and expected to adhere to safety procedures and the proper use of safety equipment when in performance of these tasks.

Qualifications

For GS-11:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position. Specialized experience may include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.

Examples of GS-09 level assignments may include: Responsibility for planning and carrying out assignments given in terms of long-range projects. This level of work would have required the individual to make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work. The work required planning, coordination, and integration of various phases of projects and/or application of initiative and resourcefulness to independently analyze and evaluate data and results. Approval was obtained prior to implementing significant deviations from established guidelines.

**OR applicants may substitute successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in the physical sciences or other field of study directly related to the work of this position for the required 1 year of specialized experience if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of this position.

**OR applicants may substitute a combination of appropriate specialized experience (as described above) and appropriate graduate level education (as described above) that is beyond the first 2 years of progressive graduate study to meet the qualification requirements.
