About the Position: You will serves as a Survey Technician conducting various types of field surveys utilizing multiple equipment platforms, processing collected data, and presenting in the required formats for delivery to end users.

Help
  • Determine survey requirements and develop survey products, for survey types including topographic, cadastral, boundary, construction staking, etc. utilizing CADD in an Autodesk Civil 3D environment.
  • Research historical district records, selects known survey reference points and determines the precise location of important features in the survey areas surface.
  • Assess a variety of unusual circumstances involving measuring distances, directions, and angles between points and point elevation, lines, and contours on, above, and below the earth's surface.
  • Analyze and interpret difficult requests to determine types of surveys required and respective survey products to be created.
  • Develop scopes of work and estimates that include areas to be surveyed, exhibits, access, points of contact, available control, procedures, utility requirements, and safety.
  • Plan project requirements with requesting organizations to include the development of technical approach, cost estimates, initiation and completion schedule, analysis and interpretation of requirements for products to be delivered.
  • Use a variety of data sources for surveying, mapping, CADD and GIS including GPS, photogrammetry, digital aerial photography, Lidar data, soft and hard copy mapping, GIS implementation, relational databases, satellite imagery, and published reports.

  • This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) over 25% of the duty time.
  • This position requires a valid State motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment and maintain the license for the duration of employment.
  • May be selected at any grade level with non-competitive promotion potential to target grade. Non-competitive promotion potential to the target grade based on time-in-grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the higher graded duties.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify at the GS-10 grade level, you must have:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting field boundary surveys, to include cadastral, boundary, and topographic and field surveys utilizing state of the art survey equipment and technology; conducting site visits to determine scope of project; collecting and analyzing survey data for adequacy based on scope of project; and the ability to process and analyze survey data and create survey products inside Autodesk Civil 3D environment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.
Education: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. At this grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

One year of specialized experience which includes conducting field surveys utilizing state of the art survey equipment and technology; conducting site visits to determine scope of project; developing and maintaining standard operating procedures; developing survey products utilizing CADD and GIS platforms; and serving as liaison between customers and projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.
Education: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. At this grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent:
Must have 52 weeks at the GS-09 for the GS-10 grade level
Must have 52 weeks at the GS-10 for the GS-11 grade level
