Duties

Help
  • Survey Technician ensures all operations are conducted safely, meets the desired objectives, and satisfies all applicable standards and guidelines. Conducts a wide range of survey operations.
  • Ensure that adequate control exists in the area and that sufficient survey shots are taken to adequately describe the area.
  • Process and review all of the data while still in the field to ensure that data sets are complete and that all data anomalies have been addressed and resolved.
  • Must keep abreast of new technology and methods.
  • Operate as part of a mobile, field survey party.
  • Provide practical knowledge of a wide range of technical engineering methods, principles, requirements, and topographic, geodetic and engineering surveying techniques and guidelines.

  • May be selected at any grade level with non-competitive promotion potential to target grade. Non-competitive promotion potential to the target grade based on time-in-grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the higher graded duties.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a valid State motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment and maintain the license for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires work in all types of inclement weather from sub-zero to extreme heat.
  • This position requires routine lifting of up to 50 pounds; may be subjected to stressful, hazardous and physically demanding conditions while surveying.
  • Incumbent may be subject to, when required by the situation, discomforts of wearing safety equipment such as gloves, steel-toe shoes, hard-hat, lifejacket, etc., survey backpack or other equipment.
  • May involve operating a motor vehicle with boat trailer attached or small boat.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify at the GS-05 grade level, you must have:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes possessing the ability to utilize hammers and post drivers to set survey stakes and Carsonite post, and possess the basic skills and knowledge associated with field surveying, including setting up tripods, rods, targets, and sights. Assist in conducting field surveys. Ability to print, sketch, and draw legible and neat records of field activities.NOTE: Completion of appropriate training such as in service training programs, training acquired while serving in the Armed Forces, and government-sponsored developmental training programs will be allowed credit on a month-for-month basis depending upon its applicability. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04);
OR
Successfully complete a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution (a) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Have the specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and I have some education leading to a bachelor's degree but less than required above. Have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.)

To qualify at the GS-06 grade level, you must have:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes possessing the ability to meet the skills required in the lower grades and safely operate machete, brush loppers and brush thinners to clear lines of traverse and travel and possess the ability manipulate survey data inside MS-Excel and utilize a compass for navigation. Assist in conducting field surveys. Ability to print, sketch, and draw legible and neat records of field activities. Assist in the preliminary processing of data collected in the field such as pictures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05);
OR
Successfully completed a half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Have the specialized experience as described in above, but less than one year; and I have some graduate level education as described in B, but less than the required half year. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).

To qualify at the GS-07 grade level, you must have:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes possessing the ability to meet the skills required in the lower grades and make precise measurements utilizing tape measures and rulers and fully operate and conduct precise leveling and process said leveling data into a final data set. Assist in coordinating the requirements for surveying activities. Assist in the utilization of computers and computer applications to download and process survey data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06);
OR
Successfully completed one full academic year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Have the specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and I have some graduate level education as described above, but less than the required one year. Have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).

To qualify at the GS-08 grade level, you must have:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes possessing the ability to meet the skills required in the lower grades and possess the ability to read and interpret plan sheets and map sheets containing project data, keep clear, concise and neat field notes. assisting in performing site visits to determine surveying needs; utilizing computers and computer applications in the preparation of deliverables. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07);
OR
Successfully completed one and a half years (i.e., 27 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Have the specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and I have some graduate level education as described above, but less than the required one year. Have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).

Education

To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, you must have:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes possess the ability to meet the skills required in the lower grades, and the ability to setup and operate advance surveying equipment such as Micro-station, mapping platforms, GIS and ESRI software and prepare comprehensive reports of surveys in MS-Word. Assisting in the application of a wide range of surveying methods, concepts, principles, and techniques in conducting field surveys; planning, directing, and conducting topographic and engineering surveys to support navigation, engineering, environmental, navigation and planning projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08);
OR
Successfully completed two years of graduate level education leading to a master's or equivalent degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Have the specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and I have some graduate level education as described above, but less than the required one year. Have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).
