Help
  • Perform gardening tasks following seasonal schedules and project plans.
  • Operate a variety of gasoline and diesel powered farm type tractors and vehicles.
  • Utilize a variety of gardening equipment, hand and power tools in the performance of gardening maintenance duties.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain a state of Texas commercial motor vehicle driver's license (CDL Class B) and obtain appropriate government driver's license for trucks up to 5 tons, and other equipment indicated, within 30 days of employment.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification in the use of pesticides and herbicides within 180 days of employment.
  • This position requires incumbent to work an on-call work schedule to respond to after-hours emergencies. This may include, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

STANDING REGISTER: This is a Standing Register (Open Continuous) announcement for WG-5003-06, Gardener (Equipment Operator) positions within the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Hood, TX. The initial cut-off date for referral is 25 January 2023; after this date additional cut-off dates will be established as vacancies occur.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Gardener (Equipment Operator)~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common lawn and garden tasks such as mowing etc. I can use fertilizer in lawn care and ground maintenance. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: The work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending and stooping. Occasionally climbs ladders to prune or trim vegetation and frequently lifts heavy objects of 50 pounds or more, such as bags of fertilizer, grass seed, etc. Requires frequent arm and leg movements to operate tractor and manipulate equipment controls. Requires lifting and handling heavy equipment when connecting them to tractor.
  • Working Conditions: Subject to discomforts from long periods in the hot sun, and sometimes chilly or rainy weather. Exposed to dirt, dust, chemical sprays, noise and sever jolting. Exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes and broken bones from falling, getting caught in operating equipment, or collisions with automobiles when operating on or near public roads. May wear protective clothing such as gloves, safety shoes, hard hats, protective eyewear, earplugs and boots.
