Duties

Help
  • Assists resource specialists with on-the-ground field studies to identify cultural, historical, and/or paleontological resources.
  • Researches files and records to obtain information about sites scheduled for cultural resources.
  • Reviews reference material to aid in identification of artifacts recovered during inventories.
  • Plans and carries out non-complex cultural resource field inventories.
  • Compiles, summarizes and interprets data obtained during inventories; presents findings and recommendations.
  • These positions require the use of motor vehicles. In most cases this will be a 4-wheel drive vehicle or All-Terrain Vehicle.

Qualifications

GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include working with a professional archeologist, planning and carrying out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources and writing reports based on findings; and applying and adapting a wide range of established data analysis methods to fit a variety of circumstances; OR Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

GS-07: One year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include researching reference materials such as site maps, existing archeological inventory information, books and other written data for possible cultural sites within an area slated for development; and preparing or assisting with preparation of forms for determination of eligibility and/or nomination of sites to the National Register of Historic Places; OR Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:
Office tasks are performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. During field work you may be subject to extreme and adverse weather conditions, injuries or discomforts from pests and animals. Position requires physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform duties. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

Education

As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

The official worksite for the selectee is the duty station identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this duty location on a regular and recurring weekly basis. The selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

This is a Bargaining Unit position.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
