Duties

Help

Develops communications strategies and materials for both non-technical and technical audiences including national, international, trade, and technical
news media to describe NIST research, programs, services and policies. Responds to inquiries from the news media and the public. Supervises a team of public affairs specialists as they write news releases, conduct media outreach and respond to media queries. Supports crisis or emergency communications. Provides communications/media training to NIST staff

Qualifications

Applicants must have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 (ZA-III at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience conducting a wide range of strategic planning; science writing and editing; media relations and news outreach; publication, broadcast, web and/or exhibit production; and analysis using a variety of analytical tools. This experience must include the following activities: (1) participating in the research and data analysis process, including problem identification, planning, and execution; (2) assisting in the evaluation and/or refinement of communications programs; (3) extensive translation of complex topics in physics, chemistry, biotechnology, engineering, and other scientific fields for news articles, publications, websites, historical accounts, or video features.
