The duty station of this position may remain that of the selectee or may be any USGS location that is agreed upon by the selecting official and the selectee. If the agreed upon location results in the relocation of the selectee, the travel, transportation, and relocation expenses are not authorized.
There are ten vacancies; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.
As a Hydrologist within the Water Mission Area (WMA), Office of the Chief Operating Officer, Earth Systems Process Division (ESPD), Integrated Modeling & Prediction Division (IMPD),Observing Systems Division (OSD), some of your specific duties will include:
Communicate scientific results to a wide audience, as demonstrated through publication and presentation of scientific results, incorporation of results in Earth Systems and Hydrologic assessment documents, and participation on diverse teams of scientists and non-scientists for collaborative project planning and execution.
Analyze hydrologic data to understand changes over time and to attribute those changes to different causes. Preferred knowledge of water quality, water availability, water use, flood processes/frequency, and global change research.
Developing, modifying, and applying temporally dynamic models to assess past, current, and future hydrologic conditions (i.e. Water quality, water use, water availability, etc.) in surface and groundwater. Prior knowledge applying various modeling techniques and processes influencing availability of surface and groundwater for human and ecological use.
Analyzing both spatial and temporal data with a with preference to AI, ML, and physical-process modeling background.
Applying groundwater, surface water, water quality, or water use modeling capabilities and familiarity of atmospheric science, geophysics, or remote sensing methods of filtering large data in modeling structures.
Applying knowledge in project management, software development techniques, field computing services, and/or data processing workflows to advance the state of the art beyond current workflows for innovative data processing.
Physical Demands: The work is typically performed in an office setting with no special physical demands. However, work may also be performed in the field which involves periods of walking, bending, climbing. The work may also involve some overnight travel for training, meetings, and site visits.
Work Environment: The work is usually performed in an office setting. However, work time may also be spent periodically visiting field sites. Field site visits are typically performed in either an outdoor setting subject to weather changes, diverse terrain, and safety hazards associated with working around complex features and/or construction, or an industrial setting subject to noise, fumes, and moving machinery. Both settings may require the use of personal protective equipment. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the scientist complies with safety instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others' safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisor.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-11:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in hydrology or other directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in hydrology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine hydrologic work. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work. At this level, Hydrologists have a sound working knowledge of the principles of hydrology and the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work.

For GS-12:
