Duties

Help
  • Performs scheduled cyclic preventive maintenance and limited complexity repairs to parts, components and ancillary support mechanisms of heating equipment; air conditioning equipment; and domestic and commercial type kitchen and bakery equipment.
  • Performs incidental flat work welding using oxygen-acetylene and electric arc processes
  • Performs reinstallation plumbing by replacing corroded fittings, coolers, tubing, valves, floats, pipe lengths of existing systems.
  • Performs carpentry tasks such as cutting, replacing and caulking broken window glass, re-hanging of doors, installation of hasps and security latches, etc.
  • Utilizes advanced automated HVAC troubleshooting software, web based chat bots and equipment to enable successful troubleshooting and repair of advanced technology HVAC and building systems.
  • Operates a light-utility motor vehicle to transport self, materials or others to work sites remote from immediate shop facility on a routine basis.
  • Operate a 168-inch lift, 2000-6000 pound capacity forklift to transport heavy materials in and around shop compound area.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) Certification type UNIVERSAL as required by section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990 EPA mandatory technician certification.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license and any installation and/or DoD license required for the type of vehicle being driven.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain forklift training and certification.
  • This position requires incumbent to work an on-call work schedule to respond to after-hours emergencies. This may include, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

STANDING REGISTER: This is a Standing Register (Open Continuous) announcement for WG-4749-08/09, Maintenance Mechanic positions within the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Cavazos, TX. The initial cut-off date for referral is 25 January 2023; after this date additional cut-off dates will be established as vacancies occur.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) for WG-08: Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Maintenance Mechanic duties. I can perform general heating or air conditioning maintenance duties; I can perform carpentry, plumbing, and/or painting, duties. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) for WG-09: Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Maintenance Mechanic duties. I can perform cyclic preventive maintenance repair of parts and components of heating and air conditioning units, freezers, walk-in-coolers, refrigerators, and/or evaporators. I can perform general carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and/ or pipefitting assistance skills. I can receive work requests through automated systems, and perform a variety of data automation duties. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort for WG-08 & WG-09: Very frequently lifts, Positions and carries items weighing from 20 to 50 pounds. Items exceeding 50 pounds are normally lifted by more than one person, or moved with mechanical devices. Work involves prolonged standing on concrete floors, stooping, climbing of utility ladders and working in cramped or awkward position.
  • Working Conditions for WG-08 & WG-09: Work is performed in a shop environment and frequently on-site out-of-doors subject to inclement weather conditions. Work environment includes exposure to intermittent noise, dust and dirt, grease and oils, and use of chemical solvents. Posted safety hazards include eye, foot and hearing hazardous areas. Safety equipment to include safety toed shoes, gloves, protective aprons, safety glasses, ear plugs and hearing protective devices are issued for hazard abatement, required for use during each actual exposure to hazardous working conditions. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of this job and do not meet criteria for compensation by environmental or hazard pay.
