A COMPUTER ASSISTANT, GS-0335-7, --Performs technical support specialist duties. Acting as a focal point for organizational computer related activities, provides guidance on technical aspects of computers and system use to organization users. Based upon space available for equipment, selects the optimum way to set up new or added hardware and analyzes security requirements and directives for solutions. Considers certification and accreditation (C&A), risk analysis, computer security, and communications security issues for new equipment, classified, and unclassified systems. Works with network management and information assurance personnel to ensure appropriate C&A is completed and submitted to the Designated Approval Authority. Connects peripherals, and performs system startup. Installs, upgrades, maintains, and configures or modifies configuration for new or updated software. Performs client configuration management functions, configures initial installs, modifies user introduction menus, configures initial system or platform state, modifies system for functionality or user requests and modifies or recovers database files for resident application programs. Provides software application assistance for commonly used office automation applications; creates, modifies, and removes directories; moves files from one media to another; and checks files for corruption. Researches and performs upgrades to workstations to include both hardware and software. Performs maintenance on personal computers. Runs specialized software to clean up the internal hard drives to eliminate unnecessary downtime. Monitors Local Area Network (LAN) upgrades and software releases to ensure users are current with changes and networks are functioning properly. In responding to calls for assistance, performs initial system diagnostics; troubleshoots system errors; formats/partitions hard drives; creates floppy boot disks; completes backups and restores data. When possible, recovers data from system crash. When unconventional problems or difficulties beyond the capability of the technical support specialist are encountered, contacts the state Help Desk for assistance.
--Performs computer security duties. Performs ongoing security review; reports security breaches, distributes security information and installs anti-virus software and updates as available. Functions as the organization's computer security manager/information systems security officer. Promotes and publicizes security awareness concerning unauthorized or illegal use of computer hardware and software.
--Monitors and maintains computers and related peripherals and tracks routine maintenance of existing computer equipment. Performs initial setup and routine maintenance on computer equipment. As a liaison with the installation help desk, keeps up-to-date records of hardware and software within the organization, regularly consults on equipment changes, and ensures follow-up on all reported difficulties. As the need arises, thoroughly researches software products to obtain information regarding the best product to meet functional needs. Responds to requests for help with hardware and software maintenance. Performs routine inventories to keep track of computer supplies on hand and follows up with IMPAC card custodian when supplies are needed. Establishes and maintains official documentation to track inventory of all computer equipment. Prepares and coordinates purchase order requests, provides necessary documentation and justification for computer equipment and software, and coordinates requests with appropriate officials within and outside the organization.

  • Most MNNG position are covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

MILITARY COMPATIBILITY:
Upon selection, individuals will undergo a background check to validate suitability for employment with the federal government as permitted by law, regulation, Presidential order or other authority. Suitability is dependent upon the particular requirements for security clearance, sensitivity level, and DOD IT network access. Items checked include, but are not limited to all criminal history record information, employment history, education and fiscal accountability/responsibility.

The individual selected must be assigned to a compatible military position and must also maintain satisfactory membership in the Minnesota Army National Guard.

Qualifications

MILITARY GRADES: ENL E1-E7

Failure to obtain a compatible MOS may result in termination of employment.

GENERAL AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:GS-07 - Must have at least 12 months experience working with computer languages, codes or abbreviations; performing production control functions; coordinating work load priorities and scheduling multi requirements; and identifying and tracing processing failures. Experience performing specialized projects and assignments using knowledge of fundamental data processing methods, practices and techniques in work involving development, test, implementation and modification of computer programs and operating procedures.

AREAS OF PRIORITY: In Accordance with MN National Guard Regulation 690-335 (Army) or 36-1 (Air), Applications will be forwarded to the selection official to conduct reviews by area of priority as listed below

Area 1: Current On-board Minnesota National Guard Title 32 Technicians who are in permanent or indefinite technician status as a result of being competitively hired within that National Guard component applying for a position within the component which they are currently employed.

Area 2: Current Minnesota National Guard Title 32 Technicians who are in permanent or indefinite technician status as a result of being competitively hired at a sister component that is identified on the Position Vacancy Announcement (PVA), including onboard Title 5 employees that are also current members of MNNG; i.e. Army MNNG to Air MNNG, Air MNNG to Army MNNG.

Area 3: All Minnesota National Guard members currently assigned to the MNANG or to the MNARNG applying for a position within the component in which they are currently assigned. i.e. temporary technician or Traditional Guardsman.

Area 4: Currently assigned service members in other branches of the military outside of the Minnesota National Guard, to include those assigned to Active Duty, Reserve or other state's National Guard.

Area 5: All individuals able to and willing to become members of the Minnesota National Guard including prior service not currently assigned to a military component and non-prior service US civilians.


Evaluation Factors: Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of appropriate education, experience, training, self-development activities, and special awards. Candidates are considered on the basis of available information on their current application and supporting information that has been provided to this office. To ensure full consideration, applicants are urged to submit information about their training, self-development, outside experience, activities and awards. National Guard military (Part-time) service is considered as full-time experience when evaluated against the qualification requirements for a technician position. The applicant is credited with actual number of months the member has been in the National Guard if the experience is related.
