This is a Title 32 excepted position. This vacancy is OPEN to the public, to those in the UTARNG or willing to join. IAW UTNGR 690-12 dated AUG 2022 and LIUNA-UTARNG CBA dated 11 OCT 2022, Priority will be given to all current, onboard employees of the UTNG. Major Duties: This is not an all-inclusive list

As a FABRIC WORKER (Title 32), WG-3105-5/7/9, you will:

  • Fabricates canvas covers, tarpaulins, and other canvas and leather items that are difficult to plan, lay out, construct, and fit because of figure irregularities, uncommon shapes and sizes, unusual designs, or intricately constructed parts.
  • Measures area, objects, or machinery that canvas is to be installed on.
  • Sketches pattern of item to be fabricated on heavy paper or cloth, laying out work, as necessary, circles, angles, curves and irregular shapes.
  • Sews/bonds parts of canvas, leather, and synthetic materials together.
  • Replaces hardware on canvas and webbing.
  • Repairs worn or damaged leather equipment and attachments.
  • Attaches tack buttons by clinching tack and buttons to material with hammer and wood block or by fastening with tack-button machine.
  • Prepares and circular-stitches iron rings.
  • Inserts brass grommets using die set, lead block, hollow steel cutter and punch, fastener anvil, riveting hammer, and wood mallet.
  • Inserts eyelets, attaches tabular or belt rivets to canvas and webbing items, installs tent slips, and attaches other types of hardware to canvas equipage and tentage slips by clasps.
  • Cuts out and attaches various types of billets to canvas equipment.
  • Fabricates stitched grip and rope reinforced strap handles.
  • Hand sews leather-using saddler's stitch or running stitch; using tools such as stitch maker, awl, fid, and needles.
  • Repairs or replaces upholstery on tactical, commercial, and combat vehicles and equipment.
  • Repairs or replaces defective seat parts such as frames, springs, and padding.
  • Measures, cuts, sews, and/or bonds new covering using tools of the trade.
  • Installs and secures interior trim such as doors and cowl panels, armrests, metal trim, and door and window handles.
  • Cuts out and installs new floor mats, carpeting, and weather stripping.
  • Cleans, maintains, and makes necessary adjustments to tools and power sewing machines used.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MILITARY REQUIREMENTS:

Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership.   • National Guard Membership is required.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

  • Medical screening will be completed upon selection for hire.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training which demonstrates the ability to take measurements, make patterns and layouts, mark, cut, fit and sew or cement parts together, using hand or power tools and equipment and knowledge of fabrics and constructions methods.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

WG-05 - Have 6 months of experience or training which demonstrates an applicant's ability to learn procedures used to repair, modify, alter or make fabric equipment, clothing or other articles. Experience which required the use of common hand tools such as screw drivers, pliers, awls, scissors and shears, to perform simple tasks. Experience in selecting materials and using simple arithmetic to figure yardage of fabric needed. Experience in following written instructions.

WG-07 - Have 12 months of specialized experience or training which demonstrates the ability to read and interpret designs and blueprints and the skills to sketch patterns. Experience which demonstrates the skills in making and cutting out simple patterns; sewing patterns together, punching holes and attaching hardware to various types of fabric. Experience applying mathematical principles such as those used in the calculation and measurement of fabric. Experience inspecting items and determining the amount and type of fabric needed for the repair. Experience operating, repairing, and maintaining sewing machines, punch presses and other related equipment. Experience using a variety of hand and power tools and measuring devices such as flexible measuring tapes, straight and curved rules, protractors, compasses, dividers, squares, patterns and templates.

WG-09 - Have 18 months of specialized experience or training reading and interpreting designs and blueprints, technical manuals, and prints, and drawing individual patterns, making alterations or adjustments to difficult patterns. Experience computing dimensions, lay out circles, angles, curves and irregular shapes. Experience planning, laying out, altering and constructing different, new or one-of-a-kind items. Experience applying mathematical principles such those used in the calculation and measurement of fabric. Experience operating, repairing, and maintaining sewing machines, punch presses and other related equipment. Experience using a variety of hand and power tools and measuring devices such as flexible measuring tapes, straight and curved rules, protractors, compasses, dividers, squares, patterns and templates.
