Duties

Help

The Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for building relationships and trust with local communities in the Washington metropolitan area and engaging audiences that more accurately reflect and honor the make-up of the greater Washington regions and will work closely with the Head of Interpretation and Audience Research as well as Interpretation staff, Education staff, Curatorial staff, External Affairs and Public Programs staff to launch the Museum’s first dedicated community outreach and engagement initiative.

In this position, you will:

  • Strengthen current alliances with civic and cultural organizations.
  • Collaborate with the Interpretation team on interpretive planning for exhibition and collection installations, envisioning opportunities for community collaboration and co-creation.
  • Create a community engagement plan and operational strategy for developing and deepening relationships with underrepresented audiences, which aligns with departmental and organizational mission, values, priorities.
  • Identify training opportunities to enhance internal staff competence and comfort with effective community engagement practices.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as working directly with people of diverse abilities and people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds; developing and facilitating convenings and collaborative programs with community groups; assessing outcomes of community engagement activities; working collaboratively and creatively on internal teams and across departments in a collegial and respectful manner; and communicating orally and in writing proficiently enough to write statements of work, grants, letters, memoranda, or reports.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.
