Summary

The VA San Diego Healthcare Network is recruiting Food Service Workers for Nutrition and Food Service. The primary purpose of the Food Service Worker position is to support the food service operations provided to Veterans. They work in one or more functional areas such as food preparation, dish and pot washing, dry and refrigerated storage and receiving, and the serving area doing work such as portioning cold food, dipping hot food, working in the dish room and passing trays.

This vacancy is a solicitation for a Hiring Fair Event, which will be on an invite only basis once the position qualifications have been met. If you receive an invitation, you will be required to attend in person on:

  • Date: 2/4/2023
  • Time: 8:00 AM. - 3:00 PM
  • Location of Hiring Event: VA Outpatient Clinic - (Address and map of hiring fair location will be provided to candidates who have met minimum qualifications for invitation)
You will be notified of your qualifications and if determined to be minimally qualified, you will receive an invitation for interview and MUST RSVP no later than 01/25/2023. Applicants should plan for a long day if selected, as there are several pre-employment stations to clear.

Requirements for Pre-Employment Screening:
  • Fingerprints (Two forms of ID required)

  • Immunizations (Immunization records preferred)
Major duties are below but not limited to:
  • Sets up assigned station with the correct supplies and food items.
  • Serves food cafeteria style by placing uniform portions of food on customers'/patients'/residents' plates.
  • Breaks down and cleans the station when assigned.
  • Sets up dining room tables for service, place food and beverages on tables, and replenish items as necessary.
  • Returns soiled trays and dishes to the dish room.
  • Delivers meal trays to the patients' bedsides and report the patients' comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian.
  • Prepares beverages according to the number of servings required.
  • Prepares fresh fruit, cold salads, dressings, sandwich fillings, cold sandwiches and simple cold desserts in specified quantities.
  • Sorts, wash, peel and cut cold foods using knives or other equipment.
  • Provides assistance to cooks in the food preparation area, such as weigh, measure and assemble ingredients according to standardized recipes.
  • Prepares uncooked food items, such as sandwich spread and salad dressings.
  • Operates, breaks down and cleans all equipment assigned to food service and related areas.
  • Portions food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and specified dishware.
  • Prepares boxed-to go meals.
  • Selects and places correct items on patient trays.
  • Reads and interprets a regular or modified menu, individual diet cards, tray tickets and patient selections.
  • Identifies obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designated by the menu.
  • Decides what food items to serve for the most common diets.
  • Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas.
  • Separates food waste, trash/recyclables from dishes, glasses and silverware.
  • Unloads food/tray delivery carts.
  • Stores sanitized dishes, glasses and silverware.
  • Scrapes, soak, scour, and scrub cookware and utensils.
  • Moves garbage cans when collecting and transferring trash from the work area to the disposal area.
Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the Medical Center.
