Summary

The position serves as the Custodial Worker Supervisor and shares the responsibility with the other supervisors for assigning, directing, reviewing the work of work leaders, laborers, and custodial workers and evaluating their work performance; planning, scheduling, and coordinating work operations; and resolving problems related to the work performed by Building Services’ staff, responsible for cleaning and maintaining all National Gallery of Art areas.

Duties

Help

As the Custodial Worker Supervisor, you will:

  • Provide overall management of day and night laborer/housekeeping work forces, comprising 43 full-time Gallery employees and 4 subordinate supervisors. Uses Microsoft, Outlook, Word, and Excel daily to establish shop records, and to communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Work with colleagues from other departments and division to coordinate set-up and tear down requirements for special events. Helps with the assembling/disassembling of tables and chairs, provides standby service for emergency cleanup, and coordinates final cleanup of Gallery spaces.
  • Understand and interprets basic architectural drawings, specifications and diagrams.
  • Knowledgeable in the application and use of tools and equipment required to accomplish assigned tasks. Uses computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) daily to schedule, track, and account for material costs and labor hours for assigned work orders.
  • Incumbent shall be knowledgeable of the workers compensation program and treatment for injured or disabled employees. Understands and implements the collective bargaining agreement.

Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria:
Candidates must be able to walk extensively, in addition to standing, bending, reaching, climbing stairs and ladders. Must be able to lift items of light to moderate weight. Must be able to perform in cramped, isolated locations that are difficult to access, as well as hot, humid, dusty spaces such as attics and mechanical rooms. Must be able to work in noisy, drafty, dusty, and dirty areas. Must be able to work around chemicals and chemical vapors, and to don protective clothing and equipment. Requires evening and weekend work, and carrying of a Gallery-issued mobile device for after-hours communication.

Work is performed throughout the NGA Campus.  Work is usually performed indoors.  Areas include but are not limited to, offices, art galleries, public spaces, locker rooms, break rooms, restrooms, and staff spaces.  On occasion employee may be exposed to noisy, drafty, dusty, and dirty areas.  In addition, they may be exposed to cleaning chemicals and related chemical vapors.  

Work is occasionally performed outside in all kinds of weather, (heat, cold, sun, wind, rain, and snow), and environmental pollutants (carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, dust, pollen, soil, and other airborne particulate matter) may exist at times in varying levels of potential hazard.

 "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Time-in-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures.
