Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: You will serve as Biologist and work on multi-disciplinary teams to execute the mission and perform the exploration, sampling and testing of materials at both existing and new project sites. This position located in the Civil Design Branch Geology Section in Nashville, TN.

Help
  • Plan, scope and oversee subsurface investigations for assigned projects. Selects the most appropriate drilling and sampling techniques for materials to be encountered.
  • Inspect and logs boring to classify materials encountered in accordance with the Field Manual.
  • Perform site reconnaissance on outcrops, stream beds, quarries, or other exposures to gather pertinent information in addition to reviewing published literature and geologic maps.
  • Assist with quality assurance and data management during construction.
  • Conduct dam safety training for Operations personnel.
  • Maintain record of all sources investigated to ensure that materials used are from acceptable locations or ledges.

  • Position requires sufficient geological knowledge to plan and execute complex studies that typically involve investigations into one or more recognized phenomena.

  • May be selected at any grade level with non-competitive promotion potential to target grade. Non-competitive promotion potential to the target grade based on time-in-grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the higher graded duties.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education/experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. In addition to meeting the basic requirement in the education section, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

To qualify at the GS-07 grade level, you must have:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, and reporting findings orally and in writing. Assisting with field work that includes technical observance of exploration and classification of geologic materials in accordance with field manual, field mapping, and interpretation of data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05);
OR
Successfully completed one full academic year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Geology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in B above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: ? (1) Class Standing - You must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR? (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - You must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - You may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/). Have the specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and I have some graduate level education as describedabove, but less than the required one year. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).

To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, you must have:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing limited geological studies and preliminary analyses; performing calculations and applying correction factors; plotting of preliminary prediction values for portions of larger studies; identifying fossils and rock samples, and determining extent of formations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07);
OR
Successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as Geology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Have the specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and I have some graduate level education as describedabove, but less than the required one year. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).

To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing the exploration, sampling and testing of materials independently or as a part of a team at project sites; preparing appropriate portions of plans, specifications, design memoranda and various other reports; and assisting in the characterization of a site by development of a geologic model, stratigraphic column, cross-sections, structural contours, and/or rose diagrams. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09);
OR
Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as Geology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Have the specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and I have some graduate level education as describedabove, but less than the required one year. Education

Basic Education for Geologist:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

A combination of education and experience which includes course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience, and must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for indicating clearly the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions.)
