Duties

Help
  • Serve as Telecommunications Specialist shift member or support staff responsible to the shift or section supervisor for the continuity of communications services and operational capabilities involving several telecommunications stations.
  • Serve as a communications technician of a specific shift or section.
  • Responsible for performing the operations and maintenance duties associated with terrestrial and satellite based telecommunications systems and associated status reporting.
  • Provide on-the-job training and technical assistance to all newly assigned personnel.
  • Responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and pertinence of reports received from peer units.
  • Evaluate communication circuits, systems, networks, and equipment periodically using appropriate test equipment.
  • Conduct fault isolation and repair of the systems associated with circuits and systems in multiple facilities.
  • Maintain complete knowledge regarding all operational facets of the facilities.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires irregular hours on rotating shifts. Overtime may be required on short notice to include nights, weekends, and holidays in support of related mission requirements.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) developing solutions to telecommunications issues; 2) analyzing funding requirements for multimedia telecommunications operations; 3) maintaining various telecommunications equipment; and 4) developing alternatives to meet customer requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-09).

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in electrical or electronic engineering, mathematics, physics, public utilities, statistics, computer science, telecommunications management, information systems management, business administration, industrial management, or other fields related to the position to be filled.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

  • This position is designated "Mission Essential." In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
