  • This position requires initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996.
  • The position requires small craft operation certification and is subject to applicant and random drug testing in accordance with USDA Department Regulation 4430-792-2.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Basic Requirements: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Or

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level defined as one or more of the following: Assisting in the preparation of documents related to geological studies/programs or mineral resource studies or assessments; assisting in the routine observation, measurement, inventorying, and recording of scientific data used to support geological studies; OR gathering information and researching data for geological studies using a variety of established methods, procedures, and techniques where tasks involved research and analysis of data.
OR
One full year of graduate level education in a geological program of study;
OR
An appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work;
OR
Superior Academic Achievement (to determine if you are eligible, go to: http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/policy/ApplicationOfStds-04.asp).

For the GS-09: One year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is defined as advanced geologist trainee experience in one or more of the following: participating in geologic studies or investigations on a variety of projects where minerals and geology activities have an effect on development and/or management of forest resources; participating in gathering geological data in the field and assisting in summarizing and interpreting data as input to planning decisions and other resource projects; OR assisting with monitoring and inspecting minerals projects and assisting in working with permittees on compliance issues.

A master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., in a geological program of study;
OR
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional information

The salary amount will be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). A gradually reducing COLA will continue to be paid after December 31, 2012.
