Duties

Help

You will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance and repair of the mechanical and electrical aspects of machinery. You will be responsible for the economical use of time and materials to the degree normally expected of a journeyman maintenance mechanic and will be expected to properly use and take care of assigned tools and equipment. You will also be required to maintain records and provide written documentation of work using electronic communication systems.

Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments may include:

  • Performing preventive maintenance and repair of the mechanical and electrical aspects of machinery such as heating, air conditioning, air compressors, electrical services/shore tie equipment, ventilation equipment, fire alarm systems, heat pumps, boilers, rollup doors, adjustable life ramps, industrial equipment, and pumps moving liquid.
  • Performing preventive maintenance and emergency repairs to sprinkler systems, docks/piers/wharfs, pilings, grounds, buildings, chain link fencing, camels, unclogging drains, repairing leaking pipes, installing new pipe and replacing old pipe, repairing malfunctioning toilets, sinks and faucets.
  • Performing limited carpentry, cement work, welding, minor painting, and clean up.
  • Interacting with building tenants in the completion and scheduling of work.

This includes Time-In-Grade requirements for current status employees applying through merit promotion procedures. Status applicants applying for a promotion must have 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:

  1. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT)
  2. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  3. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  4. Use of measuring instruments
  5. Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  6. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
  7. Knowledge of materials

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Selectee(s) for this position who are current federal employees on permanent appointments and will be moving outside of the current commuting area of their current position to accept this position are authorized to receive a one-time relocation incentive of 25% of the salary including locality for this position. Receipt of the bonus will require a 12 month service agreement. The employee must establish a residence in the new geographic area prior to payment.


Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent position are authorized to receive a one-time recruitment incentive of 25% of the salary, including locality for this position. Receipt of the bonus will require a 12 month service agreement.

"Newly appointed" refers to the first appointment (regardless of tenure) as an employee of the Federal Government, an appointment following a break in service of at least 90 days from a previous appointment as an employee of the Federal Government, or, in certain cases, an appointment following a break in service of less than 90 days from a previous appointment as an employee of the Federal Government.
