Summary

National Defense University (NDU) supports the joint warfighter by providing rigorous Joint Professional Military Education to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and select others in order to develop leaders who have the ability to operate and creatively think in an unpredictable and complex world.

This is a Title 10 Excepted Service Appointment. Appointment is not to exceed 3 years with the possibility for extension.

Duties

Help
  • Designs policy-relevant academic programs and engagement activities that provide context, promote understanding, establish professional networks and equip African security professionals to address insecurity effectively.
  • Has experience with: U.S. policy towards Africa; the nature of insecurity in Africa; the nature, scope and trends relating to Africa?s security sector; national/regional strategies to enhance security outcomes; and African security studies.
  • Responsible for: developing the Africa Center?s regional security portfolio of work; developing curricula for academic programs; designing and executing executive-styled academic programs for senior security sector officials.
  • Serves as advisor to individual participants or groups of participants during and after academic programs.
  • Maintains a professional network and represents the Africa Center at conferences, functions, and events.
  • Participates in a range of activities to include serving on administrative committees, leading ad hoc initiatives, and mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
A Professor of Practice is an outstanding practitioner in defense, government, or the private sector and a recognized expert in their field. A Professor of Practice will have a record of at least ten years of public service, professional achievements, specialized certifications, and/or regional, national, or international prominence. He or she must have earned a master's degree, and may or may not have an earned doctorate, from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent) in African Studies, Conflict Management, International Relations, Political Science, Economics, Strategic Studies, Defense Policies, National Security Studies, or a related field. The Professor of Practice must have substantial and recognized expertise, knowledge, outreach, and networks that add value to critical components of the Africa Center mission.

Required:
- Experienced in the African context with a background in security studies and issues surrounding African security development;
- Have relevant field experience in Africa or continental conflict zones for academic, international or research institutions or as a practitioner for governmental or non-governmental organizations;
- Master's degree in African Studies, Conflict Management, International Relations, Political Science, Economics, Strategic Studies, Defense Policies, National Security Studies, or a related field required;
- Minimum of 10 years of public service, professional achievements, specialized certifications, and/or regional, national, or international prominence;
- Have academic credentials in security studies, security sector reform, conflict management or other related field with practical experience in Africa (doctorate preferred), as well as a demonstrable knowledge of U.S. - Africa policy;

Preferred:
- Fluency in French, Portuguese, or Arabic.
- Experiencing living and working in an African country

Education

Education Requirement: Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or, international equivalent, (doctorate preferred) in African Studies, Conflict Management, International Relations, Political Science, Economics, Strategic Studies, Defense Policies, National Security Studies, or a related field.

2. Please describe your experience working on the African continent, advising program participants and/or African leaders on key African Security Studies concepts and how to apply to problem-solving, policy development and institution strengthening in African countries and/or organizations.

3. Please describe your ability to develop and execute Africa-focused academic programs through curriculum development, research and preparing course materials.

4. Please describe your experience and ability to conduct scholarly and policy research and to publish scholarly articles relating to contemporary and emerging African security issues.

5. Please describe your ability to build collaborative relationships across agencies/organizations and your ability to present on topics and engage in effective communicate to maintain professional networks.
