The candidates will work in the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) Reactor Operations and Engineering (ROE) Group as a Nuclear Engineering Technician-Reactor Operator. Installation, use, troubleshooting, and repair of neutron facility instruments. Quality assurance and configuration management of mechanical equipment. Testing and calibration of reactor instrumentation. Assist in specialized maintenance activities. Assist in specialized or non-routine refueling operations. Participate fully in emergency response drills. Eligible to apply for licensure by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Due to 24/7 coverage, these positions require shift work.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of the specialized experience equivalent at the GS-08 (ZT-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience in the operation, maintenance and safety aspects of nuclear research reactors.

Two full years of graduate education related to the work of the position

OR

A master's degree related to the work of the position

OR

A combination of education and experience

This position has physical requirements which include but may not be limited to: moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), moderate carrying (15-44 pounds), reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, use of both hands, operation of a crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneous, specific visual requirement (correctable to 20/40), depth perceptions, ability to distinguish basic color, hearing (aids permitted), depth perception to minimum of 50 sec of arc, field of vision > or = 70 degree in horizontal meridian both eyes, color vision for red/green/orange/yellow, and hearing avg. >30dB or 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 Hz.

This position has environmental factors which include, but may not be limited to: working outside and inside, electrical energy, working around machinery with moving parts, working on ladders or scaffolding, working below ground, working closely with others, working alone, protracted or irregular hours of work and ANS/ANSI 15.4.
