The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) manages the exploration and development of the nation's offshore resources. It seeks to appropriately balance economic development, energy independence, and environmental protection through oil and gas leases, renewable energy development and environmental reviews and studies. These positions are located within the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Region (BOEM), Office of Resource Evaluation (RE) in Anchorage, Alaska.
At the full performance level (GS-7) the major duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
As a Student Trainee (Petroleum Engineer/Geologist/Geophysicist), the incumbent performs detailed geophysical, geological, or engineering studies on multiple OCS block areas, which involve structural and stratigraphic features, to determine the structure and stratigraphic delineation of oil and gas reservoirs on the Federal OCS and contiguous areas with minimal assistance from the staff geoscientists, engineers, and Section Supervisor.
The incumbent receives classroom and/or on-the-job training in support of oil and gas exploration and development, assessment of undiscovered resources, and fair market evaluation to assist more experienced staff. The incumbent attends selected training seminars, meetings, and other organizational activities. The purpose of the training is to provide experience in the practical application of basic data evaluation techniques and concepts related to the oil and gas industry.
The incumbent conducts detailed subsurface mapping of oil and gas reservoir studies to support recommendations to management, with minimal assistance from staff and Section Supervisor. Projects involve determining the thickness and extent of the reservoirs for use in lease sales in support of fair market value, national assessment of undiscovered resources, and/or in support of the Natural Oil and Gas Leasing Program.
Performs interpretations and analysis using computer workstations to interpret 2D and 3D seismic data, well log data, and other geophysical, geological, and engineering data with supervision and assistance from staff geoscientists/engineers and Section Chief.
In coordination with an Alaska BOEM subject matter expert (SME) the incumbent may travel to different locations in Alaska meetings in support of BOEM programs.
Salary Information: GS-07 $50,216 - $65,275 per annum. Special Salary for 0899 Series (Engineering and Architecture Student Trainee): GS-07 $61,763 - $76,822 per annum.
First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lower salary range of the grade level.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
Applicants must be able to work in the Anchorage, AK duty location throughout the duration of the Pathways Internship.
Duration of Appointment / Job Status: This is a NTE one year appointment in the Excepted Service.
The incumbent will work up to 20 hours per week during school sessions and is expected to work full-time up to 40 hours per week during school breaks and summer.
This position is subject to a pre-employment background investigation.
Use of Direct Deposit is required.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the (1) Pathways Internship Eligibility Requirements and (2) the Minimum Qualifications Requirements defined below.
To be eligible for this internship all of the following requirements must be met:
1. You must be at least 16 years of age
2. You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a degree or certificate program at a qualifying educational institution on a full or part-time basis.
3. If enrolled, you must be in good academic standing (At least a 2.0 GPA)
4. You must provide a transcript (official or unofficial) and proof of enrollment/acceptance.
NOTE: You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.
GS-07 Qualification Requirement:
In addition, to qualify for the GS-07 grade level you must have 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.
