  • Compile and report information about the nature and extent of known cultural resources.
  • Conduct inventories of cultural resources.
  • Insure that archeology work assignments are carried out in safe, timely manner according to established standards and procedures.
  • Interview source individuals concerning project areas.
  • Research maps and aerial photos.
  • Prepare Cultural Resource Inventory reports and site forms.
  • Enter archeological artifact and projects data in appropriate forms and databases.
  • Produce site and survey maps.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-05: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service;

OR Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with course work directly related to the position;

OR a combination of education and experience that together meets the qualification requirements for this position. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Examples of specialized experience are defined as one or more of the following: Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Assisted in computing, compiling, and presenting archeological information in site records and/or reports using designated, well-established guidelines; Assisted in processing and cataloging recovered archaeological artifacts and related materials. Used a compass, topographical maps, and/or GPS unit to find boundaries of archeological survey areas and for recording archaeological sites,

For the GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service;

OR One (1) full year (18 semester hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as: anthropology, archaeology, history);

OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience that together meets the requirements of the position. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Examples of specialized experience are defined as one or more of the following: Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Conducted cultural resource surveys of areas designated for ground-disrupting activities such as timber sale harvests or road building; Performed a variety of computations and assessments of standard archeological data including completing archeological site forms and survey reports; Researched library and archival information such as State and National register files, historic documents, archeological reports, maps and photos regarding archeological project areas

For the GS-07: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service;

OR One (1) full year (18 semester hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as: anthropology, archaeology, history);

OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience that together meets the requirements of the position. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Examples of specialized experience are defined as one or more of the following: Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Monitored archeological projects to ensure sufficiency of on-site surveying and recording; Prepared reports, such as cultural resource inventories, that document project's environmental and cultural backgrounds, methodologies, and findings; Identified and recorded on maps or aerial photographs the exact locations and orientations of artifacts found.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

RPL applicants who meet the basic minimum qualifications and have a rating of at least minimally successful on the most recent performance appraisal.

VEOA applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements and are determined to be among the best qualified. Best qualified is defined as receiving a rating of at least 91 out of a possible 100 based on responses to the occupational questionnaire.
