Help
  • Serves as the lead architect for assigned military design and civil works projects in the District.
  • Provides design and/or technical review of specific architectural features for the most significant, complex, or controversial projects assigned to their section.
  • Provides technical input/oversight of both in-house and Architect- Engineer (A-E) contractor-designed projects for new construction; maintenance/alteration/repair of existing facilities, and for special projects or studies.
  • Develops general and detailed drawings, design analyses, computations and calculations, and technical specifications for architectural features of assigned military design projects.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Architect:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in architecture or in a related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

B. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following: (1) Related Curriculum - Degree in architectural engineering provided the completed course work in architectural engineering provided knowledge, skills, and abilities substantially equivalent to those provided in the courses specified in statement A above, or (2) Experience: 1 year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of any college courses, 5 years of such experience is required. This experience must have demonstrated that you have acquired a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience for GS-09:
One year of specialized experience which includes1) applying architectural concepts, principles, and practices applicable to the full range of architectural duties related to the various stages of planning, design, and construction AND 2) assisting with community planning, architecture, civil, environmental, mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering focused projects.


Specialized Experience for GS-11: One year of specialized experience which includes1) applying architectural concepts, principles, and practices applicable to the full range of architectural duties related to the various stages of planning, design and construction, 2) assisting with design, layout, and construction civil works and/or military projects AND 3) utilizing design and information modeling software.

Specialized Experience for GS-12: One year of specialized experience which includes1) applying, architectural concepts, principles, and practices applicable to the full range of architectural duties related to the various stages of planning, design and construction 2) overseeing architectural designs for military design and/or civil works projects ; 3) preparing building design and construction budgets and schedules, 4) estimating and negotiating contract modifications for civil works and military projects; AND 5) producing projects utilizing design and information modeling software.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

  • This is a developmental position to GS-12. You may be selected at the GS-09, GS-11 or GS-12 level. Promotion to the full performance level is not guaranteed. You may be eligible for non-competitive promotion to the target position upon meeting time-in-grade restrictions and the following requirements:
  • (1) Incumbent demonstrates ability to perform at target grade level;
  • (2) Higher level work exists at target grade level;
  • (3) Increased responsibilities are assigned;
  • (4) Supervisor recommends promotion;
  • (5) Incumbent completes all required training and conditions of employment, and;(6) Incumbent completes all regulatory requirements for career ladder promotions.
