Duties

Help
  • Performs welder duties using electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes.
  • Work involves planning, lying out work, positioning and clamping work, pre-heating metal, and maintaining temperature to prevent distortion.
  • Fabricates, modifies and uses templates, jigs, fixtures and other guides to repair, or fabricate metal items for a variety of equipment such as combat and tactical vehicles, artillery and small arm weapons.
  • Work processes include pre-heating, brazing, bead welding, tack welding, flame cutting, pressure welding, and heat treating.
  • Removes refits and replaces the damaged parts of wood components; sands and refinishes surfaces suitable for painting.
  • Operates a variety of welding equipment, stud machines, power tools and other tools and equipment common to the trade.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Welder~ without more than normal supervision. Perform common welding task such as utilize light and heavy gages, and hardened metals to weld assigned items, using flat vertical, horizontal and overhead positions to prevent overheating and distortion. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision
  • Physical Effort: Work involves standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and crawling. Welding is performed on flat, vertical, horizontal and overhead positions (as required). Frequently lifts items weighing 15 - 40 pounds and occasionally items over 45 pounds.
  • Working Conditions: Most of work is performed in building that is moderately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Incumbent is exposed to fumes, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches, and heated materials; possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects; and discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves and flash shield. Insures that hazardous materials/waste within work area are handled/processed within operating guidelines. Guidance for proper handling of hazardous materials/waste is obtained through formal training efforts and specific guidance issued by the supervisor. Insures that storage drums, and other containers housing hazardous materials/waste, are properly palletized and secured for movement. Checks to insure that containers are sealed and reports any deficiencies to the supervisor. Properly disposes of hazardous materials and waste used or generated at work site. Immediately notifies supervisor of any accident or spill and initiates response actions as directed.
